I got a system installed for free when I signed a 5-year contract. It was valued at about $1800. The novelty wore off and I stopped setting it after a few months. I display the sign in my front window and people can see the panel when they come into my house, which looks pretty cool. At the very least, I figured the advertising would be enough of a deterent. I live in a quiet area after all.
They show up the next day, and I ask a perfectly valid question about after my contract ends, and I stop being monitored by ADT, can I add additional sensors? The answer? Sure! At $150 a piece plus the install cost for what was monitored equipment, but no longer will be. I argued with them for a minute and they got defensive and condescending. Fifth problem I dropped it, but they continued to beat a dead horse. Finally, I asked them to leave and take their equipment with them. They looked at me like I was crazy. Maybe so, but I had had enough of them taking 6-7 hours to install a few plastic pieces around my house and answering personal phone calls and trying to get my dog to like them. The last two are sort of petty, I know, but they were the icing on the cake for me.
5/2017 aunt moves to retirement home. Canceled monitoring service. Still in auto bill system, I sent back stating it was canceled. 1/2018 she passes. Received continuation of bill. Sent back previous cancellation note along with death certificate. In April 2018 someone at ADT actually recognizes that she is dead. I receive invoice for 83.00, no big deal I just pay it. THEN I get invoice for 250.00 with no explanation for what it is for, I ignore. Another one, I write back, another one in Oct. 2018 and I call. They say that they sent me a box for the equipment and I have to return it. I never got a box and their records indicate that an empty box was returned to sender. The box would have been the only indication to me that I needed to return any equipment. So 18 months later I have to see if someone kept the equipment from a 95 year old who lived in a nursing home? This is not the first issue with ADT. Please don't use them, it's a headache.
Actually, Jean's concerns are valid. I had spoken with ADT about this recently after purchasing their cameras. Apparently, the cameras are motion-activated and will only record for 30 seconds. Afterwards, the camera goes through a 4-minute resetting period before it can record again. Technically, an intruder can walk into a camera's view (thus activating the camera) then walk away and wait 30 seconds for it to finish recording. Afterwards, the intruder will have 4 full minutes to do whatever they want before the camera starts to record again. That's plenty of time to break in and out, and the only clues you'll have is footage of someone walking by. I ran this scenario by an ADT rep and they were stumped. The rep than told me that ADT does, allegedly, offer cameras that record constantly, but they require additional equipment and cost upwards of $350 per camera. Sorry, not gonna happen. For $350, I can buy 4 cameras at Home Depot and have them stream to an external hard drive. Don't get me wrong, I love ADT's window and door monitors, but the cameras are for the birds. I'll be replacing my ADT cameras with third party cameras that actually record 24/7.
I was very impressed and pleased with the service received today, Sept. 2, 2014 by technician xxxxxxx. He was very professional and efficient in changing out/updating my control panel and demonstrating features of my system that I never before knew. xxxxxx was respectful of my alarm areas and even dusted off the top of my control box so the dust wouldn’t fall on the floor. He ended the call by making sure I had no more questions or concerns and by conducting a final check of my system. He exemplifies true customer service!
The technician arrived to install the system and explained how the 2-way voice works. I think I will use the Pulse App feature alot more than this but it is a good feature to have. Don't count on getting a rate at the $36.99 mentioned price, most likely it will be around $45-50 unless you do the old land line system. Either way I got a good deal and a lot of free equipment so thanks for doing this research.

In my time with the system, the big winners so far are ADT's Pulse software, the IP video cameras, and some third-party add-ons, namely the Nest Thermostat and the Ring Video Doorbell. I say big winners because these are the components I use daily—the house hasn't burned, been burgled, or flooded, so I haven't much needed many of the other components, but I'm glad they're there.
I had a representative from one of ADT's subcontracted sales companies come to my house last year in August. He gave us a whole spiel about how if he could put a sign in our yard we could get a security system for free. My husband and I both specifically asked him how long the contract was for for the monitoring monthly fee and were told that it was 1 year. We specifically asked what it would cost it us to cancel after a year and he told us it wouldn't cost us anything. He told us that when a year was up we should call and tell them we were going to switch companies and they would lower our monthly payment or we could just stop it anytime after a year.
We have had our current security system for about a year now. We have been extremely happy with it, our favorite feature being that we can access our system from ours phones. Our installation was quick and professional. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is lately the system has been failing to arm. When we called to ask the company, they said the chip needed to be replaced for $80. Overall we are happy though!
My family has been using ADT while I was growing up (guess you could say I was born and bread white and blue) so I ended up following in their footsteps and got it for my own home whether that was the best deal or not I don't know. Installation process was quick, the guy really wasn't here for too long at all. The "smart" option is a bit confusing and I wish it was explained a bit better, but in time I'll figure it out. I can truly say they are one of the better security systems out there.
When I first moved to my new place it had an alarm system in it that had an adt sticker on the box downstairs, when I called the number I instantly became leery of the overly confident man on the other end. I would buy anything over the phone so he told me he could send someone to my house to better explain things and “ease my mind”. I don’t know where they found this guy who was at my house about an hour later. He had an adt shirt on and came in and started wandering around my house looking at the equipment.
I upgraded from ADT basic after 8 years to ADT Pulse and it feels like a whole new company and equipment. I went from having to enter my keycode into the panel to now being able to use the Pulse app from our phones and tablets and having live access through the cameras anytime. It cost about $15 more a month than what I was paying but we got rid of the land line and are loving it. Get what you think you might want ahead of time so you don't have to pay to upgrade later. They have good deals and promo's as well.
