I have had ADT security for almost 2 years now. I bought the system to help protect my family after a home invasion. After 1 year of service, we moved and chose to transfer service to our new house. We had a technician come out and perform the installation and once that was complete we started using the system. A year after transferring service to my new home, I had an issue with the keypad. I called my local ADT office to have them come out and repair it, only to be informed that they never actually transferred the service to my new address!

I am extremely disappointed with my most recent encounter with an ADT technician by the name of John C. for starters I greeted him kindly and he completely ignored me as if I was speaking to someone else in the room . Upon him asking me what issues I was having with my system, he kept cutting me off stating we were using the system incorrectly, and raising his voice at me to the point he was practically yelling at me answering me in a scornful manner. For someone whose job consists of interacting with other people and in this case required going into people’s homes where they are supposed to be helping a person, his behavior was very rude and unacceptable. The equipment, security system and ADT Pulse has been great. Just had a rough start with the tech but I suppose not all of them are going to be like that, he could've been having a bad day.

We had ADT service for about 3 years in Columbus, OH. We “tested” the system several times, when our cat would accidentally set it off, or when we would by forgetting to turn it off and then opening the door. And every time the company quickly contacted us, always very professional and calmly asked for our security code. I felt very confident that in a true emergency they’d be just as responsive!

Overall, it works great. I tested the camera via the web app, on my Samsung Galaxy S7 running the Android Pulse mobile app, and on my Apple iPad Pro running the iOS Pulse app. Video resolution was excellent across all three views, though it's especially striking on the iPad due to its excellent screen. My only ding is what does and doesn't set off the camera can be a little erratic at times, with cars passing by on the street triggering it, but the garbage man walking down the driveway sometimes not doing the trick. That's only a few feet, however, and anyone traveling all the way down the driveway or walking from the street to the front door has, so far, always been recorded.

There are two types of glass break sensors: shock sensors and acoustic sensors. Shock sensors detect vibrations when glass breaks or shatters, while acoustic sensors are designed to detect the exact sound waves of breaking glass. I like that my rate hasn't risen in the past 5 years I have been with ADT. I just called in to upgrade to Pulse and it took alittle bit of figuring out with the customer support but I got it and I only have to pay another 1 time fee for the technician to come and replace my panel and add some new equipment. I'm really excited for it and their cameras are top notch from the research and comparison I have done.
I bought $2k+ of equipment after being told that the equipment was transferable to a new residence since I was installing it in a rental residence I did not own. It was explicitly explained that I was renting and would be moving within 3 years and was promised I could take all equipment with me to be installed in another home. When I moved I was informed that the equipment cannot be transferred but that a $500 moving credit is given, however the new home I was moving into had “a better system” and the $500 credit would cover the little bit of equipment I was missing to give me an “even better system” than I had in the previous home. New contract was signed based on this. No new equipment was installed – turns out the only existing equipment was a couple of door sensors and hard wired alarm pads, which were not used. There are no sensors on windows or 3 of the 5 doors. My last home had over ten window sensors and 5 door sensors as well as 2 alarm pads at entry doors. Now I have two doors protected and one alarm pad that can only be used in a room that is not a primary entry point and would require me to run across the house to disarm every time I enter my home. It is a 3 year contract that has to be paid in full so I am now paying for services for 3 years that cannot be used and were sold under completely false pretenses. The company refuses to deliver what was promised and continues to try to get me to buy more equipment to get what i already paid for. What’s more is that I had a 3 year contract in the previous home that they reassigned to another 3 year contract after having already fulfilled 2 years of the first contract – this is not what was explained to me, I was told the new contract was for the 1 year difference. I either have to cough up $800+ to cancel the contract or continue to pay for monitoring on equipment not installed.
Hey Jean., We suggest always testing them after getting them setup. Playback previous days data and make sure you can pinpoint certain times. Not sure this was so much the ADT Camera's fault as it was not ensuring everything was hooked up and recording from the git go. You should do this with any security camera / home security system you get. There is also a testing phase you can request where for 3 days they won't call the police if the alarm is set so you can go through and test all of the aspects (motion, window sensors and more).

First off, they will charge you an up front $99 to install, plus charge tax on that, even before you get a technician to conduct the review to set up the system. Then, the promise of equipment – they promise “pre-wired” door and window sensors, however this only actually applies if you have an existing security system and all sensors are wireless anyway, so really they offer 7 wireless sensors ($129 per additional sensor). They will bait you on by saying “a manager is on and will work with you to approve this” – don’t believe it, as you’ll never hear from that manager ever again, even when you have his/her manager id number.
The equipment included with ADT includes a control panel, keychain remote, three entry sensors, an infrared motion sensor, a high-decibel siren, a backup battery, and yard signs and windows decals. Customers can purchase an available system, or an agent can help customize the perfect system for your home. ADT customers can add safety accessories such as medical pendants and panic buttons that can make the elderly, disabled, or people with certain diseases or ailments feel better protected.
Don’t expect to get a firm cost for service and equipment from a web chat. Without seeing your property, a sales agent can only estimate. Your home will specifically need to be evaluated by an ADT installer—which is free. Some may view it as an upselling scheme to get you to buy more stuff you don’t need, but we’re actually grateful that they provide someone who can point out weak spots in our home we might not have thought of. Plus, you can always say no to additional sensors you don’t want then.

When we purchased ADT Security Company we thought it was kind of expensive, but we were willing to pay the price because when we would drive around in nice neighborhoods we would see their signs in so many peoples yards that we assumed that they must have been a good choice. Boy, were we wrong! We did not have get the service that we expected. Our alarm kept going off at all times of the night and day. Our neighbors started started complaining. The police even came out numerous times, and they started getting frustrated with us. I was even afraid that we might be sued fro disturbing the peace. Then when we would call the company, or they would call us they were many times very rude, or irritated. Needless to say, they weren’t worth the price, so we cancelled their services, and have been shopping around for someone better. Maybe each town’s ADT company is different, but now I warn all my neighbors, and friends to go with someone else!

He then said he would connect me to the “presedential dept” only to come back after holding for 5 minutes to tell me that he was not going to be able to do that. He said I could contact the local supplier to discuss this further as he was trying to get me off the phone in any way possible. I already went through that channel and the local company has nothing to do with billing!

First, I have been an ADT customer for 5 years; when I was researching an upgrade to my system, I called them first. This ADT install has resulted in a 3 month debacle by ADT that has yet to be corrected. The sales representative attempted to sell me equipment I already owned (I only realized this on installation day). And...because I was wanting a higher quality camera, the installers sold me "hd bullet" cameras. These cameras needed to be ordered and a second installation date set. On the first installation date, the installers did not follow their procedures and the HVAC did not work after ADT installed the thermostats. I had to hire an electrician to come and repair the HVAC.
I was renting a house in the countryside in North Carolina. The landlord contacted ADT to install a new alarm system in the house. The previous system was no longer covered by anyone. The install was quick and complete. The only problem being the hall motion detector which they said shouldn’t pick up the movement of a 30# elderly dog, but routinely did. They disabled that sensor and didn’t have any more issues. Whenever there was an issue, they were quick to respond via phone and on one occasion had the police meet me at the house when a true alarm came in.

If you compare only prices published on the web, then ADT Pulse looks very competitive. But in practice, if you opt for the higher end of the tiering scale and a modified system with a bunch of devices that aren't included in a basic tier package (and ADT will steer you that way), your price will quickly balloon. In my case, I wound up with an excellent all-around solution, but an eyebrow-arching upfront cost of $3,276.79 and a monthly charge of $63.89, which makes Pulse the most expensive solution we've tested to date.

Surprisingly, cellular monitoring can protect over 98% of the US’ population. It’s a misconception that cellular security systems require a strong cellular signal; they don’t. In fact, you can potentially have a cellular alarm system in a home where you can’t make cellular calls. The system works like your cell phone but doesn’t depend on your cell phone. It also doesn’t interfere with your cellular network and doesn’t require an internet connection.

Any smart security system worth its salt offers components that work together in a seamless environment and can be manipulated using customized rules. For example, you can create rules to have the lights turn on when motion is detected, have your doors unlock when a smoke alarm goes off, and have a camera begin recording when a sensor is triggered. Some systems store recorded video locally on an SD card or a solid state drive, while others offer cloud storage. I have ADT at my home and I really like it…THey are quick to call me if there is any trouble and they will come out and fix anything that is out of whack. I would recommend them to anyone for the response time and the security feel.The only issues I have had with them are the window alarms dont get them if you dont want to go home everytime it thunders..wow that was nuts..And the price seems to be a little steep..But I will keep them for my familys peace of mind..
If you don’t buy the equipment outright, Vivint requires either a four- or five-year contract — a long time to commit, especially given that you only have three days from the date of install to cancel. Afterwards, you’ll have to pay out the remainder of your contract. If you may be moving in the near future, it’ll cost you $99 to take the system with you. You could alternatively renew your contract, but then you’d be locked in for even longer.

After doing quite a bit of research into home security systems I was referred to ADT. After speaking with a sales representative and being completely up front and honest on my end, the sales person completely lied about the equipment that would be provided, the cost of the monitoring service, AND even the offer of the referral and gifts cards with their deal.
Updated on 11/21/2018: I wanted to follow up regarding the resolution to my situation. Turns out there is no resolution. I called, emailed and called again the CEO's office and they didn't can would not answer my questions. Hung up on me. Their so called Corporate Relations Manager, is a joke, she needs a back to basics training in customer service. They know they are wrong that is why they will not comment on my review. If you look at other 1 star reviews put on here after mine, you will see their response to say sorry to the customer, but mine? They won't even bother. They know I am telling the truth. Since they want to go ahead and blacklist me and remove services, that's fine. I will gladly take my money elsewhere; but they couldn't answer the one question I had for them that they are trying to use as their defense. Where does it say in the contract that they can cancel at any time and for any reason? Nowhere! Read the fine print.
I purchased an ADT home security plan through a door to door salesman. The setup and service were quick. Beside the home security update, I also get the camera doorbell and a motion sensor camera for my backyard. They both worked as expected until the last couple of months until I started to notice that the backyard camera no longer recorded and saved on the motion in the radius that is supposed to like it used to. It only saved when there is a bad (windy, storm, etc.) weather and "hit" the camera. A month or 2 later, the camera doorbell also stopped working even after I tried to reset it a few times. They quickly scheduled a tech guy to come out and tried to fix the issues. The doorbell working properly again, however, he wasn't able to fix the backyard motion sensor and wasn't sure on what could cause the issue.

I have had ADT since 2002 and as of today I'm canceling the service! After a recent move, they tried charging me more money for less equipment, sent me a bill for over $400 because of "early cancellation" although I had an appointment scheduled for a new installation, and removed a payment from my bank account after the service had been discontinued. They gave us a huge hassle for stopping service at a house we no longer lived in! Anything (equipment changes, moves, etc.) starts a new three year contract. In the amount of time I have had ADT services, I could have bought and paid for multiple, more cost effective services, not to mention the level of customer service. I am done!

Well - after being an ADT customer for 5 years and really never having an issue with one exception. when we bought the newest indoor infared camera I was not excited about the fact that it doesn't work in total darkness like they say. That is usually not an issue because we have a light turn on if it senses motion. The issue came when the light bulb burned out and the camera did sense motion but all we got was a clip of total blackness. Also the 4 minute reset is definetly an issue. When will ADT fix this? I am considering a nest camera because of these issues.
There is a reason why this company has a 1 star rating...avoid them like the plague. They are a high pressure sales company who abuse the elders.  My mother sign a contract with them in 2011.  ADT wants the elder to believe they still have a "verbal" contract and they keep billing them despite the system not working for two years.  They wanted to charge her another $400 to "repair" their system and they also unilaterally increased the price of the service.  When we tried to cancel, they apply high pressure tactics to try to retain claiming there was a "verbal" contract...there was not...and they had a host of high pressure questions...this is a dirty company and stay away!
Last year, we relocated to a new home and decided to give ADT another chance since the prior homeowner had used ADT and there was some existing equipment that we hoped to re-use. In addition to the existing equipment (sensors, etc) that we re-used, we opted to add internal and external cameras, in addition to the garage door automation feature. Shortly after installation, we encountered a few issues which, individually, weren’t a big deal and could have been shaken off if they were the only issues. We also realized that the technology was cumbersome and NOT user-friendly. For example, the internal and external cameras are on different systems and need to be accessed using two different apps. We had trouble with the app for the external cameras, and when asking if there was a way to access the cameras via an internet browser on a computer, we were informed that the app was the only means for viewing. When inquiring as to how we could view the external camera activity if the app wasn’t working, they indicated that we should hook up a monitor to the DVR system (the equipment that powers the external cameras). When installing our system, we were never advised that we should hook up a monitor to this system so that we could view activity. Additionally, this solution doesn’t solve the problem if we are attempting to view the external camera activity from a remote location. I recognize that integrating this type of technology is complicated, but the other security system provider that we had previously used was able to combine all cameras into one system which could be viewed either via app or internet browser.
Vivint’s mobile app allows you to arm and disarm your system, view and record camera footage, and everything in between. Our tester praised Vivint’s mobile alerts, noting that they come in handy for anyone prone to absent-mindedness: “The notifications for the door sensors are nice in case I open my basement sliding door and leave it open. It continues to check in and provide a notification that the 'sliding door is still open.’”
A few of our favorite providers allow you to DIY your alarm system installation, while others send a professional to do the task. Professional installation allows for a home security expert to evaluate your home’s security needs and educate you on how to best utilize your system. The drawback is that professional installation often involves an additional fee. When you opt to DIY, the process is typically quicker and you can avoid any appointment-scheduling acrobatics.
A few min later he comes to me and tells me he’s got bad news and all my stuff is out date. (i thought that was pretty fun because I had looked in the box downstairs before calling and the inside cover clearly had a sticker on it stating it was install about 10 months earlier) I played along… He did his little sales pitch about giving me better stuff and blah blah then he says it’s like $700 to replace what I had as he’s shoving paperwork & a pen at me. I told him he was out of his mind! So then he tells me he’s gonna call his boss and see what he can do, a few minutes later he tells me he can give it to me for free. At this point I’m totally weirded out by the guy and told him I needed time to think and could I call him later. He got totally indignit with me and couldn’t understand what my problem was and that it was free. I asked him to leave and he sat down at my kitchen table! I tried to be very polite but he wouldn’t get up he said he was gonna see what else he could work out or something ridiculous. I left the room and called my neighbor who came over and removed the man from my house. It was absolutely insane!
We had the worst time when we moved. It's a really long story, but the cliff notes version is that they said it would be an easy transfer and offered approx $400 worth in services. The control box and the keypad device both came with nearly dead batteries. 2 separate occasions they started beeping in the middle of the night. ADT told us to go to Radio Shack to get the batteries....we went there, Amazon, ebay, etc. and no one sold them. The system couldn't be accessed on our phones either. The device kept making us test and re-test and still wouldn't work properly. We had 3 technician visits and 6 months with a system that wouldn't work. They won't let us cancel. If This Then That or IFTTT for short, is a service that allows you to connect other services and applications together (using what IFTTT calls “applets”), letting you accomplish almost any task imaginable. For instance, you can use IFTTT to automatically cut off your phone’s WiFi when you leave home to save power. Just remember that if you use IFTTT to automatically disarm your system when you enter your home, your phone’s location service must be powered on. Otherwise you’ll get a loud surprise.

For over two years, I paid ADT monthly for my alarm system, only to find out that they were not actually receiving signals from my home (so, in fact, the alarm system did not work). In compensation, they offered me 6 months at $15/month. Need to test your system more often people and make sure the monitoring company is calling you when the alarm gets set off regardless of what company you have; this should be done!
You won’t find any entry sensors with Canary, so it’s not great for homes with many access points (multiple doors and ground-floor windows), though it does have the ability to sync with multiple Canary cameras to form a web of video security. If you’re living in an apartment, and primarily need security cameras for home surveillance, the tower’s 145-degree lens should cover the majority of your living space.

We originally used ADT in a former home, and eventually switched to a different provider after a false alarm occurred while we were out of the country. Upon our return, ADT technicians were never able to determine the root cause of the issue. The new provider that we used wasn’t perfect either, but I felt that their customer service and the technology were far better than our collective experience with ADT.
