This will depend on which option you choose. We were able to find that most, but not all, ADT packages require a landline. For an added cost, you can have the ADT Cellular Guard technology monitoring package with Remote and Video service levels. Basically, your control panel will be equipped with a cellular chip. You won’t have to choose either a landline or cellular connection—you can simply have the cellular as a backup in case something happens to your landline.
ADT is the largest security service provider in the U.S. and Canada, and it has been protecting its customers for over 140 years. ADT alarm systems are expertly installed by technicians who can sometimes visit your home the next day. ADT is perfect for customers who are okay with paying a bit more for their state-of-the-art equipment and technical support and maintenance. The equipment available varies by area and dealer, but customers can choose from Honeywell, General Electric, and ITI manufactured systems.

ADT’s Essentials and Essentials Plus security packages require a landline to hardwire into your home. According to NPR, more than half of all households are cellphone-only homes and don’t have landlines. If you don’t want to pay for home phone service just to get a security system, you can upgrade to a more expensive package that connects to the ADT monitoring network via a cellular system.

2 months ago my truck was broken into my wallet swollen and my bank account drained. I will never forget the following day at work, the whole day I was worried about the thieves having my driver's license and knowing my address. I didn't have a security system and feared they would return and rob my home as well and with 3 children at home in couldn't help but to be frightened and worried. As my day at work was coming to an end,all I could do was pray for some way to protect my family. I was home for 2 hrs when there was a knock at the door. It was ADT! They explained how they were in the area selling systems and could choose 2 homes for a special promotion. I like having my home and family secured now. I would recommend them to everyone and give them 5 stars.
ADT Pulse is not a fully compatible z-wave system as they exclude many sensors that would make the system attractive for home automation. Reason for the limited functionality seems to be nefarious, i.e. trying to support their outdated business model relying on high price installer that sell overpriced. The system has potential but they need to get everything in order.

Your Local Security is a high quality professional review site. The customer reviews you see here are the result of direct feedback from Protect Your Home customers. We do not pay customers for reviews. If they participate, reviewers do have the opportunity to enter various contests to be randomly selected as a winner. We do not reward reviewers based on whether their written analysis is positive or negative. Rather, we publish full and complete reviews from individuals with no alterations. We do select which reviews will be published excluding reviews due to language, inappropriate or irrelevant content.

It's also important to note here that there's no direct connection between ADT Pulse and ADT Canopy. The Pulse service provides security and automation to your home that you can access and control via the web and your Pulse mobile app. Canopy is a personal and mobile service that integrates with other smart home devices or various Samsung wearables and basically gives you threat protection and access to ADT's emergency dispatch services on the go.

Updated on 11/21/2018: I wanted to follow up regarding the resolution to my situation. Turns out there is no resolution. I called, emailed and called again the CEO's office and they didn't can would not answer my questions. Hung up on me. Their so called Corporate Relations Manager, is a joke, she needs a back to basics training in customer service. They know they are wrong that is why they will not comment on my review. If you look at other 1 star reviews put on here after mine, you will see their response to say sorry to the customer, but mine? They won't even bother. They know I am telling the truth. Since they want to go ahead and blacklist me and remove services, that's fine. I will gladly take my money elsewhere; but they couldn't answer the one question I had for them that they are trying to use as their defense. Where does it say in the contract that they can cancel at any time and for any reason? Nowhere! Read the fine print.
Some DIY systems are self-monitored, which means you'll receive alerts when devices are triggered, but it's up to you to contact the local authorities if there's a break-in or a fire. However, DIY vendors are increasingly offering professional monitoring services; some require a contract and some allow you to pay as you go so you're only being monitored when you need it, such as when you're away on vacation.
The technician arrived to install the system and explained how the 2-way voice works. I think I will use the Pulse App feature alot more than this but it is a good feature to have. Don't count on getting a rate at the $36.99 mentioned price, most likely it will be around $45-50 unless you do the old land line system. Either way I got a good deal and a lot of free equipment so thanks for doing this research.

A smart lock is typically part of a robust smart home security setup, but you don't have to invest in a full-blown system to use one. If you're using a home automation hub to control things like lighting and thermostats, you can add a Z-Wave or Zigbee smart lock to the system without much effort. Alternately, if you don't have a home automation hub, look for a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth lock that comes with its own mobile app. Smart locks use standard pre-drilled holes and are fairly easy to install. Some models use your existing keyed cylinder and deadbolt hardware and attach to the inside of your door, while others require that you remove your existing interior and exterior escutcheons and replace the deadbolt and strike hardware.

Smart guy Dallin! So many people think a gun is enough but we hear so many stories of home invasions happening when the gun wasn't close enough to get or the burglar getting in at night and the residents sleeping through it until it's too late. At least with any alarm system in place you get a good 30 second warning to get things ready in case of a face to face conflict.

“Was having a lot of trouble signing in on my Pulse account. Had to use it every time. Called and talked to 3 people about this problem. All they could tell me was to reboot my phone. I did so. On the 4th call I talked to a man and he told me that ‘When you did the last upgrade the this was a existing problem.’ Said that the company has known about this and was trying to fix it. Just forget that the emails I was getting telling me that my phone was LOCKED UP to just forget it and when the next upgrade comes it should be fixed. Why did it take 3 people who didn’t know about this problem and 1 that did.” – Kenneth, August 10, 2017, Consumer Affairs

In February 2017, I had three cameras installed, in which one camera simply sat on my kitchen sink because the technician didn’t want to hassle with figuring out an electrical connection to set the camera up to view my swimming pool area. The front outside camera was supposed to have night vision, but it didn’t. The night vision function finally popped in surprisingly during the summer of 2018. The camera system is down almost as much as it works.
ADT uses a hard-wired home security system which communicates with the monitoring station through a landline telephone connection; however, customers can also add a cellular backup to a hardwired system or pay an additional fee to use cellular communication as the primary monitoring. ADT maintains six monitoring centers in different regions of the country. With multiple co-locations and system redundancies, ensuring uninterrupted monitoring in the event of any individual facility outages. ADT offers a wide selection of security equipment and devices. ADT Pulse provides additional equipment and services to support advanced security functions as well as home automation. The control panel uses the Z-Wave platform for wireless communication with sensors and smart devices. ADT Pulse is also compatible with IFTTT (If This Then That) and integrates with Nest Learning Thermostat. The company also offers a Smart Voice Sounder that calls out “fire” or “intruder” based on what sensor has sounded the alarm, and temperature and flood sensors that can protect against water damage from burst pipes. Its ADT Pulse, Smart Home offerings include remote door locks, appliance control, and cameras.
1 week ago I agreed on the price I would pay monthly for the alarm service with ADT. The installer came today and the prices of what we had talked on the phone were very, very different, but the surprise was that when the installer came to my house she began to uninstall the existing alarm system and after all that she tells me that the price was different from the one I had agreed on by phone so therefore I canceled the service and had the old alarm system reconnected

I agree with Jan. Security systems are not like a cell phone that you need the 'latest new gadget' every 2 or 3 years. If you get a quality system it can last 10+ years, just make sure you adapt to any big changes. There have really only been a few large leaps in alarm technology. 1) When it went from wired to wireless in later 90's. 2) When it went from land line to cellular towers in 00's. 3) Automation which really is a separate market and niche although closely related. Hope that helps in your decision making!
While you can learn a lot by reading the ADT reviews on this site, you won’t have as much luck on the official ADT website. The security company is not very transparent about the pricing of the plans or equipment. For example, you are unable to see at a glance the price of motion detectors, additional control panels or carbon monoxide detectors. Potential customers should also be wary of what prices are shown. There are often additional fees that will raise the total bill when all is said and done.
I just got rid of m ADT system. It was installed onOctober 1st and in the four months I had it, I had at least 14 service calls to fix broken or non-functioning equipment and more calls from them telling me that a window was open when it was not. The window in question has not been opened over 25 years. And every time they would call about my “open window”, it would make the alarm impossible to set because it required over-riding that window. I got a call from an ADT representative telling me they were receiving an alarm from my system. I was standing right next to the alarm when she called and I said “If the alarm was going off, shouldn’t I be hearing it.” She said “Absolutely”.... Read More
New service phone calls to the company may result in a transfer to a company known as Protection 1. Earlier in 2016, ADT announced its acquisition by asset management company Apollo which also owns Protection 1. The two companies, in essence, are now “merged”. Protection 1 serves customers out of ADT’s service region, and vice versa. However, ADT may not mention this relationship before transferring you.
I feel safer both at home and when I’m away. It took no time at all to get used to the system and set up additional codes for those special people who needed them. So far, I’ve only set the alarm off by accident once, when I tossed open a downstairs window one morning before turning off the alarm. Fortunately, I was close enough to the keypad to stop it almost as quickly as it started. It was a great reminder that the alarm is immediate and LOUD!
Professional monitoring means that, if an alarm is triggered, your system will send an alert to a command center and a trained dispatcher will assess the situation, alerting local emergency professionals if needed. With DIY monitoring, there’s no command center connected to your system. Your security system will send any alerts to your smart device for you to determine if emergency professionals should be called.
Frontpoint offers three monitoring plans: Protection, Interactive, and Ultimate. Our tester opted for the Interactive plan but ended up dissatisfied with its lack of live video surveillance. When she received an alarm notification while on vacation, she had no way of gauging whether her home had been broken into or if her cat had managed to trip the sensor. It turned out to be a false alarm — one she paid the local authorities $150 for.
Hello Kai-We apologize for any issues that you encountered with the ADT authorized dealer. When you installed your services in CO, you would have signed and been provided with a copy of your residential services agreement, that clearly spells out the term of the agreement, 36 months. Should you have any further concerns, please feel free to email ADT at AlwaysThere@adt.com. Thank you. -Gabe
