I said I'm being relocated to NYC, not cancelling your service because I don't want it anymore. How am I supposed to plan for that when I initiate your service? Plus I'm keeping my other account open. He said you signed a 3 year contract and have to pay out the remainder regardless. And he wouldn't escalate me to a supervisor. I think this is outrageous and a horrible way to treat a customer. And thats why I'm posting my first ever review. I'm furious.

There are many points at which a home security company can disappoint its customers. This may account for the large number of critical comments about ADT security systems. Customers complain about undisclosed fees, prices that are sharply higher than quoted, punitive cancellation policies, relentless upselling, incompetent technicians, malfunctioning and obsolete equipment, and poor customer service. I went with ADT because they were a trusted name in the industry with businesses such as banks and other companies that need reliable monitored service. That was the most important thing to me and they have never let me down. I have been with them for over 15 years and the equipment has operated well. If I wanted to have them add additional services over the years, I know that there is an installation cost but it is well below that of a general contractor. And I am sure existing customers can self install if they know how. I have worked with customer service to do alarms tests and inquire about other things and have never had a problem. I have read many of the complaints on this site and many are a result of the home owner not doing their research or expecting free services. These companies have contracts to recoup the equipment costs. They need to pay an employee to do a truck roll for installations…every time. They are not a charity service. And I should note that in over 15 years my monthly fee has only gone up once. Not bad compared to some of the others. So again, I would rather use a company that the banking industry relies on because the most important thing to me is reliability in the event of a crisis. ADT has always been there 24/7.

I bought $2k+ of equipment after being told that the equipment was transferable to a new residence since I was installing it in a rental residence I did not own. It was explicitly explained that I was renting and would be moving within 3 years and was promised I could take all equipment with me to be installed in another home. When I moved I was informed that the equipment cannot be transferred but that a $500 moving credit is given, however the new home I was moving into had “a better system” and the $500 credit would cover the little bit of equipment I was missing to give me an “even better system” than I had in the previous home. New contract was signed based on this. No new equipment was installed – turns out the only existing equipment was a couple of door sensors and hard wired alarm pads, which were not used. There are no sensors on windows or 3 of the 5 doors. My last home had over ten window sensors and 5 door sensors as well as 2 alarm pads at entry doors. Now I have two doors protected and one alarm pad that can only be used in a room that is not a primary entry point and would require me to run across the house to disarm every time I enter my home. It is a 3 year contract that has to be paid in full so I am now paying for services for 3 years that cannot be used and were sold under completely false pretenses. The company refuses to deliver what was promised and continues to try to get me to buy more equipment to get what i already paid for. What’s more is that I had a 3 year contract in the previous home that they reassigned to another 3 year contract after having already fulfilled 2 years of the first contract – this is not what was explained to me, I was told the new contract was for the 1 year difference. I either have to cough up $800+ to cancel the contract or continue to pay for monitoring on equipment not installed.
We had ADT at the house we used to live in. I loved having the safe and secure feeling knowing we were monitored and able to reach help if it was needed. We had a chime on the doors so if they opened we knew someone was coming in. We had all the windows and doors covered too. We rarely had a false alarm, in the approx. 10 years we had them maybe this happened twice. The false alarms were due to battery problems and ADT quickly sent a person to repair. One of my favorite features was the secret alarm code you could enter when you got home that really meant send help. Being a mom at the time of younger children it helped me feel less vulnerable. Any time I was in contact with ADT I always had a pleasant experience and never had a problem dealing with their people. I also felt a sense of peace knowing when we all went to bed we had the alarm set and felt secure and safe.
