Our family chose ADT as our Security Provider many years ago. We would occasionally travel, and ADT was the company that we trusted with our families safety while we were at home, and our personal possessions while we were away. ADT provided peace of mind that we would not have had otherwise. We owe ADT a great debt of gratitude for assisting in keeping our loved ones safe.
I work for a company that uses ADT in our office for security. We had trouble with a couple sensors for which an ADT tech came to fix. Whatever he did completely messed up the system. We were without an alarm system for over a week because they didn’t have any techs that could come till then. Why do they not treat this as a necessity much like someone that is on 24/7 to fix your furnace if it goes out in the winter. They didn’t care that the office was with out security for over a week. As far as I’m concerned a security company that doesn’t care if you don’t have security is useless. ADT is useless. I’m looking in to Frontpoint to replace ADT in our company. My warning to those seeking ADT for your home. If they don’t care about a business they aren’t going to care about your home.
ADT doesn’t just monitor for potential break-ins, it also safeguards against hazards like carbon monoxide, fires and floods. Smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and flood sensors can be added to your security system to monitor for hazardous conditions. The company even offers a variety of panic buttons that can be worn or placed in your home and pushed to alert first responders. Wearable and key fob panic buttons are also accessible when you’re away from your home.
A smart home security system connects to your Wi-Fi network so you can monitor and control your security devices using your smartphone and an app. Entry-level systems usually include some door and window sensors, a motion detector, and a hub that communicates with these devices using one or more wireless protocols such as Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, or a proprietary mesh network. You can add extra door, motion, and window sensors to provide coverage for your entire house and build a comprehensive system that includes door locks, garage door openers, indoor and outdoor surveillance cameras, lights, sirens, smoke/CO detectors, water sensors, and more.
Digital Security: Even though your primary concern is protecting your property, it’s also crucial you’re protecting your personal data, too. In an increasingly connected world, you need to make sure all of the images and videos created by your security system are protected from hackers. Look out for systems that boast password and encryption capabilities.
I bought $2k+ of equipment after being told that the equipment was transferable to a new residence since I was installing it in a rental residence I did not own. It was explicitly explained that I was renting and would be moving within 3 years and was promised I could take all equipment with me to be installed in another home. When I moved I was informed that the equipment cannot be transferred but that a $500 moving credit is given, however the new home I was moving into had “a better system” and the $500 credit would cover the little bit of equipment I was missing to give me an “even better system” than I had in the previous home. New contract was signed based on this. No new equipment was installed – turns out the only existing equipment was a couple of door sensors and hard wired alarm pads, which were not used. There are no sensors on windows or 3 of the 5 doors. My last home had over ten window sensors and 5 door sensors as well as 2 alarm pads at entry doors. Now I have two doors protected and one alarm pad that can only be used in a room that is not a primary entry point and would require me to run across the house to disarm every time I enter my home. It is a 3 year contract that has to be paid in full so I am now paying for services for 3 years that cannot be used and were sold under completely false pretenses. The company refuses to deliver what was promised and continues to try to get me to buy more equipment to get what i already paid for. What’s more is that I had a 3 year contract in the previous home that they reassigned to another 3 year contract after having already fulfilled 2 years of the first contract – this is not what was explained to me, I was told the new contract was for the 1 year difference. I either have to cough up $800+ to cancel the contract or continue to pay for monitoring on equipment not installed.
Worst business i have ever dealt with. From the start, i was lied to by the installation guy who said there is a grace period of a month to cancel the contact without a termination fee. When i called in a week later to cancel, ADT advised it was an incorrrect information which was given by an outsourced contractor so they can not be responsible for it. So i was stuck with them for two years. When i called to cancel the account after the two year contract was over, ADT required 30days cancelltaion period which meant they will simply collect a payment for an extra month for just wanting to cancel their ridiculous service which i want no part of ever again. From start to finish, this company is a borderline fraud.
The best value plan offered by Protect Your Home is called Basic Security. It costs $27.99/month, or around just $7/week. It includes a base security system, panel, motion sensor, wireless sensors, and a wireless remote. For an additional $2/week you can get Basic Security with Equipment Service Protection. Both of these plans require a landline connection, so customers without a landline installed will need to opt for the next plan up.
I have been with ADT for 4 years now. In the beginning I had some minor issues but things got better fast. I love being able to see what is going on from my phone, we have Z Wave setup so as I drive into the zone area with my phone it triggers the alarm to turn off. I setup my light automation and everything with them all for the same cost of Vivint's base package. Even though it was a slower start, I am one satisfied customer.
We have been with ADT for 5 years now, we called today to let them we are moving and would need our service transferred. They said there would be an installation charge, ok fine, but offered us less equipment at a higher monthly charge!!! They said that cost is based on service not equipment, we want the same service we have now, no add ones. BS and if we want to cancel that will cost us $500!!! Why just because we want to move which by the way is in the same area, will cost us more and we have to get less equipment.
ADT understands the importance of safety and security in the home and place of work. As the top security company in the United States, ADT also understands the value of great deals and excellent customer service. From home video surveillance and small business intrusion detection to commercial monitoring services and government fingerprint identification, ADT has solutions for every customer.
Residential monitoring with California Security Pro is always going to include the warranty as well. Beware of any ADT monitoring rates that are below $30. You probably are not getting the residential warranty included in your ADT monitoring rates. The warranty covers any warranty parts and labor needed (first 90 days free, after 90 days just a trip charge of $25). Click here for the easy to read ADT Monitoring Cost Chart.
It’s easy to see why SimpliSafe is a crowd favorite—especially among renters. Its no-contract, DIY approach caters to families on a budget, and it’s endorsed by money whiz Dave Ramsey. It’s a solid home security choice, but the lack of home automation features keeps it from rising higher on our list, though it did recently add a security camera to their offerings.

Vivint Flex Pay gives you the option to purchase your equipment up front with no added monthly cost—and no contract—or to finance the equipment interest-free over a 42- or 60-month contract. We think it’s awesome that Vivint gives you multiple options, but you should know that even though choosing a contract means you pay less upfront, you’ll have to pay 100% of the remaining contract if you cancel early.
We have had ADT for 3 years & have never had any problems. We have recommended it to friends & they have had it installed & have had no problems either. Last year a Vivint salesman came to our door & my husband invited him in.  I was not home so my husband spoke with him. The Vivint salesman put his feet on our coffee table while trying to talk my husband into cancelling our contract with ADT. Very unprofessional! We definitely will stay with ADT.
ADT is an excellent company with state of the art equipment, solid company financials, and courteous professional employees. As a retired law enforcement professional, former head of security for a major company, and now security consultant I have used ADT for over many years. Have there been some problems? Of course – complicated security systems always have some glitches. But the problems have been quickly and professionally resolved. ADT is a good company with a solid track record.
ADT is one of the most familiar home security companies out there and the name recognition can inspire confidence in customers and help to deter potential burglars. The company loses a few points because it uses local retailers with varying levels of customer service. ADT monitoring is also more expensive than other monitoring services, so it’s not the best option for people on a tight budget.
We’ve been extremely pleased since our switch to ADT. Our business is attached to our residence, and our alarm system covers both office and living spaces. With two keypads and several trigger spots (doors, windows and a motion detector), we are fully protected at all hours of the day or night. We’ve had a few technical glitches, but our local response service has been very efficient in fixing the problems. And always so friendly!
Frontpoint’s commitment to customer satisfaction was clear at every stage, starting with our initial phone call. We were impressed with the sales rep’s attention to detail. She asked our tester to describe the layout of each room in her home, listened to her safety concerns, and answered questions about all kinds of package options. When our tester told her she needed more time to shop around, the rep was understanding and didn’t press the issue.
Hello Nessa Ann. Defender Security is an independent authorized dealer of ADT's monitoring service. They procure and maintain their own customer base, and sell and install their own equipment. They partner with ADT, as Defender does not provide a monitoring service. Should you have any concerns regarding a recent Defender installation, they can be contacted directly at 1-800-689-9554. Should you need anything further from ADT, we would encourage you to contact us at AlwaysThere@adt.com. Thank you. -Gabe

This is another Apple product on display. Apple is one of the biggest tech giants in the world. Their cameras on display is iSmartAlarm iCamera Keep Pro. The video resolution and frame goes for 1080p. Field of views goes up to 140 degrees. Night vision is included and has cloud and local. The pros are sharp image quality, motion tracking, mechanical pan & tilt, free cloud and local storage, time-lapse, and works with IFTTT and iSmartAlarm security system. The cons are pricey and pan and tilt is a little sluggish.
Amazing breakdown! I have been looking all over at different companies and they never tell you who does what better because they all want your business. I am sold on this company and am giving them a call now. To me, from what I read about other companies, they are my best option as I am on a budget and don't need massive protection (my home is small!!). Thanks for this information!
A big reason LiveWatch doesn’t rank higher on our list is its warranty policy. Although LiveWatch technically offers a free lifetime equipment warranty on its Plug & Protect hardware, it advertises only a two-year equipment warranty. A representative from LiveWatch explained to us that you have to ask for the free lifetime warranty, or else it will default to two years. Be sure to claim your free lifetime warranty if you decide to go with LiveWatch.
The Nest Learning Thermostat also requires a separate account with Nest, but unlike the Ring, you can control it with the Pulse mobile app or your web portal even though it's not directly connected to the Z-Wave control. This lets you change temperature and activate or deactivate heat or AC. You can read about the details of the thermostat in our dedicated review, but in brief, it's a slightly expensive but excellent device that not only simplifies your heating and cooling, it also learns your living patterns over time and will adjust your HVAC accordingly for peak efficiency.
Iris has quite a few flaws, as you can see below in the list of cons, which is why it isn’t higher on the list. But if you’re looking for a system that will integrate with tons of other home automation products and smart devices, Iris may be right for you. It comes with both Zigbee and Z-Wave compatibility, so it can be connected to a huge list of devices.
As you can see, the control panel isn't as pretty as Vivint's, but Vivint expects you to do more with its panel than ADT does. The Safewatch has a monochrome touch screen and a somewhat arcane menu structure. You can select zones to be disarmed while leaving other zones armed (though I didn't enable this in my house). Key system functions are performed with a four-digit security code in addition to a menu command so the system isn't vulnerable to just anyone standing in front of it. The panel has a lot of other functionality, including the ability to adjust your lighting and appliances from its menu and even check weather, traffic, or news. But in the end you'll likely use it mainly for getting in and out of your house. The menu system is rich, but the ADT master web portal and the Pulse mobile app are far easier tools to use for working with your system. You won't even need to punch in your alarm code if you opt for one of the Safewatch's bundled fobs.
To unlock video surveillance and advanced smart tech features, you’ll need its $50-per-month Ultimate plan. That’s a high price for home automation when compared to competitors like Vivint, which lets you add those features at every tier (starting at $40 per month). If you opt for a package that doesn’t include live video surveillance, consider purchasing a standalone security camera. The best home security cameras on the market range in price, but average around $200.
City-wide power failure Christmas morning 2015. Power went out while my daughter was preparing our traditional shrimp and grits. Soon after, we hastily left to grandparents' home for early dinner. Before the meal was over, we got a call from ADT. My daughter forgot to turn off the burner under the shrimp. We arrived to a yard full of firemen. Lots of smoke, but praise God, no fire. ADT contacted me and notified fire dept asap. This could have been a real disaster! System worked perfectly!!! Like a TV commercial. Thanks ADT!!!
ADT Pulse is the name of the system that includes a control panel, proprietary and Z-wave-compatible devices, and the interactive monitoring that includes two-way communication and video surveillance. It can control digital door locks and garage door openers. It also controls remote lights and thermostats so you can maintain the appearance that you’re home. ADT Pulse Live Video includes wireless video cameras, both indoor and outdoor, that work even in low light (night vision). You can watch this feed from private security TVs, your computer, or mobile devices. It’s all wireless, and you can control it with mobile devices like cell phones and tablets.

Hey Jen, the thing I have liked most about ADT is you get the most respect out of the yard sign for it. Sounds like you are in the ghetto (or bad part of town) like me and just having the sign alone gives my home the respect it needs on the block. I like the service too but the sign is the best part, also nice if you work graveyards or weird shifts like lots of us in the hood do.
A few minutes into the DIY installation, our tester got stuck getting her control panel up and online — it just wouldn’t connect. A help window popped up with a number to call, and a Frontpoint rep helped her troubleshoot the connection. After about 10 minutes, he could tell there was an issue with the circuit board. Certainly not ideal — but the rep apologized and shipped her replacement control panel overnight.
DIY monitoring or self-monitoring means that when a sensor is tripped, it’s your responsibility to gauge the alert’s importance and contact the authorities. This could be potentially dangerous if you sleep through an alert that turns out to be a serious threat, but it’s generally less expensive than professional monitoring. Some home security companies like SimpliSafe offer both professional and DIY monitoring plans. If you’re interested in DIY home security, check out our favorite DIY home security systems.
Worst experience ever. Unreliable and irresponsible service. Even for urgent matters you have to wait on line for at least 30 minutes. And because ADT Canada was not able to pick up my phone call within a few minutes as stated clearly to me the police was dispatched. When you tried to explain no one at ADT cares to take any responsibility. I have been with ADT for almost 10 years and they will not consider your loyalty if something goes wrong. I decided to leave this company. Even your alarm goes off now you will be asked to press 1 then 2 then ……. and wait forever. Think twice if you want professional and timely service.
After the pricing ding, there's the service contract. Competitors, like SimpliSafe, have no contract and let you out of your service whenever you want. ADT signs you to a three-year contract. If you were to move during your contract period, but opt to keep the service, ADT would install a basic system at your new home for $249 and let you add components at a 25 percent discount until you hit $750 worth of hardware. After that, you'd pay full price for additional hardware. You could attempt to uninstall some of the components at your old home and move them to your new one and ADT would incorporate those, but whatever is left in the old house after you leave, ADT will simply try to resell to the next owner.
First and foremost I’d like to say My Family is SAFE!I have been a member of the ADT FAMILY for several years as a happy customer.Having two security systems on at different locations (2- homes) my homes are safe.As for the service and technician installer everything was explained very professional. All items explained and my choice of upgrading is my call, installation was fairly fast but speed isn’t what I’m looking for, it’s meticulous and perfection as to where and how the equipment is installed. And my installer did a very good job not only with equipment but explaining to my wife and I on how to use all upgrades .On a scale 1thru 10 and 10 being the best…….. My rating is 10+And this is why Im a customer and have full trust with ADT and most important! My family feel safe at night or anytime I leave on business trip.
Review Last updated: August 1, 2018. Before home security systems existed, ADT hired guards that securely transferred money for banks and businesses. Fast forward 130 years and they are now the largest home security company with over 7 million active customers. What do we like? ADT reviews have stayed true to their core business of home security while several others ventured off into the internet, solar or TV space.

With a professionally monitored system, when a smoke or intrusion alarm is triggered, an agent will first try to reach you via the two-way control panel before calling your listed phone number. If you fail to respond, the agent will call 911 to dispatch an emergency responder to your home. The nice thing about professionally installed systems is you don't have to lift a finger; after you've placed your order a technician will come to your home, set everything up for you, and show you how the system works. It's important to note that in some areas you may have to file for a permit to have a security system installed in your home.
We have had an ADT monitored security system in our home for more than 5 years now. We live in a relatively safe area, but I like being able to know that the house is safe when I am home alone with our young son or when we are out of town for a long weekend. The system itself is easy to activate and de-activate and we love turning the chime feature on to know whenever any door in the house is open. Some of the cons of using ADT are that if there is an issue with the system (a bad battery back up or weird beeping – which happened to us after a lengthy power outage) there can be a delay in getting a service technician to the house.

Some DIY systems are self-monitored, which means you'll receive alerts when devices are triggered, but it's up to you to contact the local authorities if there's a break-in or a fire. However, DIY vendors are increasingly offering professional monitoring services; some require a contract and some allow you to pay as you go so you're only being monitored when you need it, such as when you're away on vacation.
Smart locks can be opened and closed using a mobile app and will send a notification when someone locks or unlocks a door, and most allow you to create permanent and temporary access schedules for family members and friends based on specific hours of the day and days of the week. Features to look for include geofencing, which uses your phone's location services to lock and unlock the door, voice activation using Siri (HomeKit), Google Assistant, or Amazon Alexa voice commands, support for IFTTT, and integration with other smart home devices such as video doorbells, outdoor cameras, thermostats, smoke alarms, and connected lighting.
If you already have an integrated smart home setup (or want to create one), then it makes sense to choose a security system that you can control from the same device network as your lights, garage doors, or thermostat. That’s where the Netgear Arlo Pro 2 comes in. This is a versatile and customizable camera-based security system that’s compatible with Amazon Alexa (including the Echo Show and Fire TV), Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings, and more. Whichever system you have, you can integrate the Arlo Pro 2 and control it with the voice commands you use for your other devices.

Vivint also recently partnered with Google to offer Google Assistant voice control to customers with smart tech. Every new smart home system includes two Google Home Minis. This means that customers can adjust the smart thermostat, lock doors, and arm the system via voice commands. Using a Google Home Mini as the smart hub in your home also ensures that even non-Vivint smart devices are manageable on a single platform.
** Information used for home security alarm system comparisons was obtained November 2016 through telephone and online research. ADT prices: based on total out-of-pocket expense to obtain services; installation based on fees for similar home security equipment packages; "Monitoring" price listed includes the additional "warranty" or "extended service plan".

"Have only had system for 2 weeks. Easy to use and effective. Only problem is when in "Away" mode the motion sensor picked up our 13 pound cat jumping up on a desk close by...THREE times! Needs sensitivity adjustment. Police, however, did come each time, so it does indeed work. Not sure why I needed a motion sensor if none of the door/window connections were broken???"

Video doorbells offer an easy way to see who is at your door without having to open or even get close to the door. These devices connect to your Wi-Fi network and will send an alert when someone approaches your doorway. They'll record video when the doorbell is pressed or when motion is detected, and usually offer two-way audio communication that allows you to speak with the visitor from anywhere via your phone.
I had someone enter my home when I was at work. ADT called me right away but the cops didn't show up in time. I called back to see what ADT recorded as to how quickly they called (to see if it was their fault or police) and they said they called dispatch after neither myself or my wife answered our phones. So regardless of how quick or slow ADT may be, it still is up to your local authorities to trust their word and come check out your house. A few things got shuffled around with but nothing of real value got stolen. Not fun knowing someone has been snooping around in our home and now I am adding some Pulse cameras to the system for better surveillance.
ADT’s Control Package offers its basic coverage and more. It also starts with a $125 upfront equipment fee, but with a monthly monitoring fee of $36.99, it adds home automation, giving you more control over the features and systems within your home regardless of whether you’re on site. In addition to remote web and mobile access, you can receive email and text notifications for various security triggers.
