If you stop halfway through installation and come back to it later, the site remembers where you left off. If you’re stalled at a particular stage for longer than you should be, a help window pops up on your device with a phone number to call. When you’re ready to activate the system, you call the customer service line, and a rep confirms that your system is online and fully functional. The entire process takes about 30 minutes.
With cellular monitoring, your system is wireless. No more lines to cut for burglars, and you will never have to deal with disrupted landlines due to power outages or other issues. Surprisingly, cellular monitoring can protect over 98% of the US’ population. It’s a misconception that cellular security systems require a strong cellular signal; they don’t. In fact, you can potentially have a cellular alarm system in a home where you can’t make cellular calls. The system works like your cell phone but doesn’t depend on your cell phone. It also doesn’t interfere with your cellular network and doesn’t require an internet connection.
We originally used ADT in a former home, and eventually switched to a different provider after a false alarm occurred while we were out of the country. Upon our return, ADT technicians were never able to determine the root cause of the issue. The new provider that we used wasn’t perfect either, but I felt that their customer service and the technology were far better than our collective experience with ADT.
If you were asked to name security companies, ADT would likely be one of the first to come to your mind. As the largest and oldest home security company in the United States, it has monitoring stations across the country and sells a variety of security devices and surveillance cameras. Most other home security businesses compare themselves to ADT because of this dominance. Though ADT has good security camera options, it isn't as transparent about its prices and packages as other home surveillance services.
ADT-Monitored Home Security Services is the longest-established security company on our review site. It was over 140 years ago when American District Telegraph pioneered in sending security alerts by Morse code. Today ADT serves both homes and businesses looking for top-notch security systems and alarm monitoring. Systems monitored by ADT use hardwired and wireless equipment to detect invasions and automate homes for energy-saving and convenience.

Overall, I'm very happy with the ADT Pulse system. I definitely experienced some sticker shock at the initial setup cost, but considering the level of service and all the equipment installed, the price is justified, and on a monthly basis, not that much higher than most of the competition. The three-year service contract definitely lags behind our other Editors' Choice winner, Vivint, but it's not a big heartache if you know you're not going to leave your current residence and completely opt out of the ADT service inside of three years.

ADT Pulse monitoring offers all the features of basic security and adds home automation into the mix, giving you power to personalize your system to your needs, whatever they might be. For anyone looking for more than just alarms and monitoring, this is the way to go. That way, you can add things like a video doorbell (Ring) or speech control with Amazon Alexa and Echo.
ADT made some changes to the Pulse app in early 2018. While the UI seems to have gotten a little friendlier, which is always welcome, it temporarily removed one important feature that I missed: cloud storage for my camera view. The camera doesn't have a great track record of performance (see below), but when it worked, I liked having the 30-second clips of whatever video it took available for viewing through the Pulse app. That's been moved to an easily-missed "Clips" button, so be careful to examine the UI closely as new features come out or get deprecated. What you miss might not actually be gone.
Have you ever forgotten whether you locked the front door or not? It’s not a big deal when you have the app because you can get automated locks, too. Rather than driving down the road, realizing you’re not 100% sure you locked it, and driving back after that “oh shoot!” moment, you just turn on the app and select the door you want to lock—saving you the time and the trip.
With a professional sentry on your side, you’ve got someone looking out for your home 24/7. If you like the idea of DIY installation and customization, but would prefer the peace of mind of professional assistance. Frontpoint’s steeper monthly rate also comes with “Crash and Smash” protection, which alerts security operators if your system goes offline. A life-saving feature if a thief tries to disable your alarm by unplugging or smashing your control panel.
When it comes to home security, ADT monitoring doesn’t sacrifice quality. No matter what package you choose, rest assured that your monitored home security system will be professionally installed by a qualified technician. The best part? If you’re looking for more convenient monitoring features, you have the option to upgrade your package at any time.

What makes the best home security system comes down to the experience that a home security company provides. A good company will show genuine interest in providing you with a solution that fits your needs. This means it won’t try to upsell you on unnecessary equipment, pressure you into spending beyond your budget, or hit you with hidden costs, policies, or other unwanted surprises after you’ve signed a contract. It should simply give you peace of mind.
If you have a wired home security system, your control panel is hardwired into your home and connected to a landline. If a burglar cuts the telephone line, your system may not be able to connect to the monitoring station. A wireless security system is generally considered safer, since they can’t be physically cut by potential burglars. Wireless connections aren’t always foolproof, but many systems have algorithms built in to alert you and the monitoring center of any wireless signal interference.
Hello Amy. We apologize for this experience. We were able to locate your account and see that you did speak with our account management team and they have lowered your bill for the next 6 months. In regards to your existing contract was initially contracted through an authorized dealer, we apologize for that concern as well. A copy of the contract should've been provided to you to review once it was signed, allowing you ample time to review the terms and conditions and cancel within your 3 day right if you did not agree to them. Thank you. -Andrew
ADT Security Services Customer Monitoring Centers help protect the people and things you value most, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is a comprehensive network of five interconnected command centers strategically located throughout the United States. The investment made in technology - and the systems in place to back it up - illustrates a deep commitment to customers' safety and security.
ADT’s alert procedure is straightforward—when an event is triggered, the security center contacts you or other trusted contact’s phone numbers first, then determines the appropriate first responders to contact. Some claim that adding too many numbers is a bad idea because ADT will try to contact your entire list before calling the authorities if no obvious danger is present (i.e. a single upper-level window alarm going off as opposed to multiple sensors).
Home automation: This comes with the higher cost monitoring package but still very affordable. ADT pulse allows one to do things with a home that was once only available to the rich and the famous. Their free mobile app is available for iOS or Android. It controls everything from an arm and disarming the alarm to controlling the security camera. When testing the ADT Pulse app, we found some cool additional alerts you can set up based upon your area.

We had our home broken into some years ago, but today, I once again feel robbed, preyed upon and vulnerable.. This time, it is the service we choose for peace of mind that have taken from us, Xfinity security. They have a plethora of things wrong with them and I could go on and on. Needless to say I am sad I switched from ADT to them and will go back to ADT as soon as I find a way out of their contract.
Hello Nessa Ann. Defender Security is an independent authorized dealer of ADT's monitoring service. They procure and maintain their own customer base, and sell and install their own equipment. They partner with ADT, as Defender does not provide a monitoring service. Should you have any concerns regarding a recent Defender installation, they can be contacted directly at 1-800-689-9554. Should you need anything further from ADT, we would encourage you to contact us at AlwaysThere@adt.com. Thank you. -Gabe

Frontpoint’s DIY installation process was surprisingly user-friendly. Because it’s a wireless security system, there’s no drilling required to run a phone line, making the process less invasive. A personalized mobile website walks you through how to get the control panel connected and online, how and where to place your door sensors, and what to do if you get stuck.

This is the absolute worst customer service I have ever received. I called in to order a security system through ADT after a break-in, and when I received my system, it was through Protection 1. The sales representative NOT ONCE disclosed to me that ADT Pulse and Protection 1 were the same company due to a merge. When I was signing my contract, I thought it was odd it said Protection 1, but the DISHONEST sales representative stated that I was just e-signing through that portal - as if it were just an e-sign software they were using instead of an actual DIFFERENT SYSTEM.

Rather than restrict control to a physical hub hung on your wall, Abode puts control where you actually need it: in the palm of your hand. Abode’s security dashboard is accessible by any internet-connected device and gives you enough information to take action from wherever you are. When Abode’s motion sensors are triggered, it snaps a photo to show you what triggered it. The smart key fob and its three buttons — away, standby/disarm, and home — allow you to disarm as you walk towards the front door. We found that a lot more convenient than racing inside to beat the alarm’s 30-second window, particularly if you have an armful of groceries or a baby on your hip.
Blink is a wireless security camera system that requires AA batteries and a Wi-Fi connection to operate. The company’s three-camera package is one of our favorites because it can cover a lot of square footage (like the first floor of a house). Each device comes with easy-to-install wall-mounting hardware. Need an extra camera? You can amp up your security by purchasing add-ons for your system.
You won’t find any entry sensors with Canary, so it’s not great for homes with many access points (multiple doors and ground-floor windows), though it does have the ability to sync with multiple Canary cameras to form a web of video security. If you’re living in an apartment, and primarily need security cameras for home surveillance, the tower’s 145-degree lens should cover the majority of your living space.
There are many points at which a home security company can disappoint its customers. This may account for the large number of critical comments about ADT security systems. Customers complain about undisclosed fees, prices that are sharply higher than quoted, punitive cancellation policies, relentless upselling, incompetent technicians, malfunctioning and obsolete equipment, and poor customer service. A minority of commenting customers, however, are very satisfied with the service.
Link Interactive leads with the slogan, “Protect What Matters Most”. And in an effort to do so, Link Interactive boasts cost-efficient, user-friendly security that the whole family will appreciate. According to its DIY policy, customers are able to build a specialized home security systems package that best suits their individual needs. In addition, Link Interactive offers up notifications in the case of power outages, a central monitoring station, and a reliable cellular system.
Once you own the equipment, you can move ADT home security monitoring to just about anywhere in the US and all you’ll have to do is pay a small activation fee (which you may even be able to get waived) to get it started up again. ADT also offers discounted equipment with its “Mover’s Guarantee,” so there’s no need to worry if you want the service but don’t plan on staying in the same spot.

Then there’s the monitoring service – they offer $27.99/mo but that’s only if you have a land phone line in your home. Including the warranty on the equipment that is supposed to be $36.99, but again they claim it’s only if you have a land line. I know others who have the service without a land line paying $36.99 no problem, yet ADT claims they don’t do that. Total garbage and lies. So now the monthly monitoring fee is up to $48.99 for wireless. However if you speak with their customer service, they will bring that down to $44.99/month and offer $300 in gift cards to make up the difference between the $48.99 and the $36.99 as promised. It’s all such a set up.

It's no question that ADT is one of the more popular alarm systems. I am now planning on purchasing a new home and doing my research on home security systems and ADT keeps on popping up. I'm attracted to the technology that they employ such as the Pulse app and placing an ADT sign in front of my new house will surely deter to-be robbers. Thanks for sharing the review, do you recommend ADT as the best home security system currently on the market?

We just moved into our first house 5 months ago in a neighborhood we didn’t know well, and getting a security system was very important to us. We considered several, and ADT just seemed to have the most bang for our buck. Our system hasn’t disappointed us one bit. Usually when I walk out of the door, my hands are full while I’m juggling a toddler. The app helps so much so that I can activate our system from my phone once I’m in the car.
“I accidentally touched button on my emergency base unit. Response time was excellent. I know if it was a genuine emergency for me your staff would respond immediately with efficiency and professionalism. I feel very secure with this system. I will definitely recommend this unit to my friends and associates. We do have an ADT Security System and we are happy and satisfied with this as well.” – Ellen, Oct 7, 2017, Consumer Affairs
The Pulse app also lets you access ADT's Home View, though you'll need to initially configure that using the web portal. Home View lets you create a visual blueprint of your house room by room and map where all your smart devices and security nodes are located. Once configured, Home View color-codes these device icons to show their status and summary activity screens, and if one of them is a camera, you can simply click on it to get a live view of what the cam is seeing.

Good review overall, I didnt realize they have been around for so long! I just wish they did more in the ways of customer retintion as mentioned in this review. Basically if you never complain then they will just keep taking your money. That may be normal with most companies but now that I know i am telling my parents to get rid of their old security equipmnent and get new stuff for free.

Most outdoor cameras, like our current top pick, the Netgear Arlo Pro 2, offer motion detection with push and email notifications, night vision, and cloud storage for event-triggered video, and some, like the Ring Floodlight Cam, pull double duty as floodlights or porch lights. Some models can even tell the difference between a passing car, an animal, and a person. Look for an outdoor camera that will integrate with other smart home devices such as garage door openers, external sirens, and smart switches.
We’re big fans of mobile access because it’s what home security is for—knowing your home is safe at any time and doing something about it when it’s threatened. Most companies now allow you to control your system this way from a keychain remote controller, mobile device (iOS or Android mostly), or web-based app for ease of use and distant check-ins.
If you’ve outfitted your system with video cameras, you’ll want to consider how long your footage is stored. Depending on the company, it may be saved to Cloud for anywhere between 12 hours and 30 days, and you have to pay for increased storage. Consider how long it will take for you to review recorded activity, especially if you are frequently away from internet.
The equipment included with ADT includes a control panel, keychain remote, three entry sensors, an infrared motion sensor, a high-decibel siren, a backup battery, and yard signs and windows decals. Customers can purchase an available system, or an agent can help customize the perfect system for your home. ADT customers can add safety accessories such as medical pendants and panic buttons that can make the elderly, disabled, or people with certain diseases or ailments feel better protected.
Adt has the worse customer service in the world!!!! Horrible horrible experience with them DO NOT LET THEM TAKE YOUR MONEY WHEN ITS TIME TO REFUND IT YOU WILL NEVER GET IT BACK THEY JUST KEEP ON TRANSFERRING YOU TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND PUT YOU ON HOLD AND EVERYTIME YOU’RE ON HOLD ANOTHER PERSON PICKS UP AND YOU HAVE TO EXPLAIN YOURSELF OVER AND OVER AGAIN I AM A CUSTOMER BUT I REGRET IT BECAUSE THEY DON’T TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE ON A 2-3 year contarct with them . The system itself it good but the CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE WORST OF THE WORST!!!!!!!!
I was satisfied with ADT and as a single woman, my security system gave me the peace of mind I needed to relax in my home with out fearing for my safety. I also enjoyed knowing that when I went on vacation, my house was secure. Many advances in home security systems have been developed since I had my system though and I would love to see what is available now with closed circuit cameras etc.
Every home is different, and so is every homeowner’s security needs. Like most technical services, you can pay for professionals to craft your home security system or you can take matters into your own hands. DIY home security means you customize your device kit, self-install, and then monitor alerts from your sensors and video feed. Self-monitoring is the common difference between DIY and traditional security, but there are plenty of companies that strike a happy medium between both. We looked at providers offering pure DIY as well as those offering professional monitoring, either de facto or as an upgrade.
Furthermore, it is interesting that the burglar was bold enough to target our house despite all the ADT signs we have posted all over and not to mention a very blatant camera in our driveway!!!!  Hmmmm.. Is this an inside job?  Did the tech who installed our cameras intentionally NOT setup the automation/alert features?  Does ADT run background checks on their staff???
