If you have a wired home security system, your control panel is hardwired into your home and connected to a landline. If a burglar cuts the telephone line, your system may not be able to connect to the monitoring station. A wireless security system is generally considered safer, since they can’t be physically cut by potential burglars. Wireless connections aren’t always foolproof, but many systems have algorithms built in to alert you and the monitoring center of any wireless signal interference.
That said, my installation price is considerably higher than what most people will see, since ADT installed several components simply so I could make them part of my test. ADT claims typical installations in homes similar to mine would be around $1,100. A spokesperson broke down those averages across its core tiers with Tier 1 (Traditional) averaging between $49 and $500 for installation, then $28.99 per month, and Tier 2 (Remote) averaging $500 to $1,000 for installation, then $47.99 per month. Tier 3 (Control) and Tier 4 (Video, which was my tier) generally run $1,000 to $1,500 and above for installation, and then $49.99 per month for Control and $59.99 per month for Video.
Ultimately, we wanted systems that could integrate seamlessly into our homes and improve our quality of life. To find which fit the bill, we spent a day outfitting a 1,900 square-foot home with the equipment of our finalists. We appraised the installation process, the ease and clarity of registering and syncing, the app experience, and functionality. We were pleased to find we could get most systems up in less than half an hour, but the quality of both hardware and software differed. We docked points for flimsy or easy-to-knock-over physical elements and slow or disfunctional cyber ones. Effective home security offers crisp and quick app interfaces (preferably with practical perks like customized sensor names and facial recognition) and instantaneous notifications.
Security Camera Surveillance: You can choose to add a video camera and monitor to your system so you can catch thieves in the act if they do choose to break into your home. Or, you may want to up the ante by installing a complex closed circuit television (CCTV) which features digital recorders, multiple operators, and several cameras. Some systems will also alert you by text if they detect anything, allowing you to log in on your smartphone to view the footage.

I have been an ADT customer for 15 years and 2 weeks ago I found out my alarm was not communicating with them so I called for repair. They told me nothing was available for 2 weeks so I set a date and was told someone had to be home from noon until 5PM. Appointment day at 4:14PM I call them and ask where the tech is. They have no clue and tell me they will reschedule for another 2 weeks out. I tell them to cancel my service and then they tell me I WILL OWE THEM FOR 30 MORE DAYS OF MONITORING after shut off. It doesn’t work – they fail to honor the appointment they set up and they want me to pay for 30 more days? Of course there is no supervisor available to talk to me but they could have one call me back in 24 to 48 hours. What an unethical unresponsive company. Never do business with them.

Never fulfilled offers at time of installing system. Put in wrong name of person living in the home. Needed supplies for system that was to be sent over a year ago and still don’t have them. Still being billed for service after cancelling service 3 months later. Scheduled an instillation for my daughters home and they never even showed up. New company offered alot more at a lesser rate. Very happy they have even come by twice since changing over to see if I have any questions. So glad I made the change.

It’s easy to see why SimpliSafe is a crowd favorite—especially among renters. Its no-contract, DIY approach caters to families on a budget, and it’s endorsed by money whiz Dave Ramsey. It’s a solid home security choice, but the lack of home automation features keeps it from rising higher on our list, though it did recently add a security camera to their offerings.

Until you’re ready to sign, it’s hard to determine exactly what your ADT home security system will cost. While standard equipment is included in their pre-configured packages, additional sensors or devices may need to be purchased a la carte. For example, a surveillance camera, costs $169; a carbon monoxide sensor is priced at $189. Depending on the what you want included in your system, you can end up spending hundreds of dollars to maximize your security system’s capabilities.

A smart lock is typically part of a robust smart home security setup, but you don't have to invest in a full-blown system to use one. If you're using a home automation hub to control things like lighting and thermostats, you can add a Z-Wave or Zigbee smart lock to the system without much effort. Alternately, if you don't have a home automation hub, look for a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth lock that comes with its own mobile app. Smart locks use standard pre-drilled holes and are fairly easy to install. Some models use your existing keyed cylinder and deadbolt hardware and attach to the inside of your door, while others require that you remove your existing interior and exterior escutcheons and replace the deadbolt and strike hardware.

We are 20+ years loyal ADT customers. As veterans, my husband and I felt extremely comfortable leaving the country knowing our family's home security was being monitored by ADT while we were deployed. However, since our new home install in 2013, we have had nothing but issues; false alarms, unreliable alarm settings, unprompted notifications from the keypad, etc. We've made numerous calls, paid for upgrades, and had techs come to the house for troubleshooting with no resolution.
As a new home owner, I made the mistake of letting myself get talked into buying a home security system by an ADT sales representative who came to my door. I am writing this review in the hope of preventing others from making the same mistake I did. The contract I now find myself in and the monthly payments I will need to make for three years is completely my own fault for making a poor decision as a consumer. I have found my ADT service to be over priced and unnecessary. My advice for new home owners: When an ADT sales representative comes to your house, don’t worry yourself over talk of bumper keys and burglaries, different contract options, and taking advantage of the new home owner “deal” before it is too late — simply don’t answer the door.
GetSafe offers excellent customer support both during and after the purchasing process. Customer reviews note that customer service reps are helpful when explaining products and packages, as well as quick to troubleshoot equipment issues. Along with great service, SimpliSafe also includes regular software updates and enhancements, so you can rest easy knowing your equipment is up to date.
Overall, only 32% of ADT employees reporting on Glassdoor would recommend working at ADT to a friend. Sale reps often complain about pay (100% commission based) and a scarcity of leads Happy employees, however, applaud ADT benefits, like a 401(k) match; medical, dental and vision coverage; and, as a New York emergency dispatch operator said, “an awesome break room with tea, coffee and cocoa.”
I just got rid of m ADT system. It was installed onOctober 1st and in the four months I had it, I had at least 14 service calls to fix broken or non-functioning equipment and more calls from them telling me that a window was open when it was not. The window in question has not been opened over 25 years. And every time they would call about my “open window”, it would make the alarm impossible to set because it required over-riding that window. I got a call from an ADT representative telling me they were receiving an alarm from my system. I was standing right next to the alarm when she called and I said “If the alarm was going off, shouldn’t I be hearing it.” She said “Absolutely”.... Read More
I know a lot of people complain about the $99 installation fee but trust me, if you have ever tried to install one for the first time...$99 is a cheap price to pay! I wish I would have paid someone to install mine for me. It was a headache to do! Anyways, I'm with ADT and it's a great system for my family. Never had a issue them and I don't have a problem with their equipment. It does the job!
