Like all home security companies, ADT offers a number of different packages to choose from. In addition to monthly monitoring costs, you also need to consider equipment costs, activation fees, installation costs, and the extra expense of any upgrades you select. Because ADT offers so many options and upgrades, it’s easy to end up with a customized ADT package that is more expensive than its competitors. Just be sure to keep a tally as you work with an ADT security pro to put together the right package for your home. If budget constraints are a factor, let your representative know up-front how much you can afford.
Many of ADT’s higher-end home automation offerings are customizable (although this will affect your final price). There’s a vacation mode that arms the system, keeps a steady temperature, and turns lights on and off to suggest that someone’s home. You can also set up situational operations. For example, if the sensor detects a fire, you can automate doors to unlock and the air conditioner to shut off, slowing the circulation of smoke.
When it comes to deterring potential break-ins, brand recognition has significant value. In fact, a study from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology found that a security sign was more of a deterrent to burglars than outdoor lighting and a neighborhood watch. An ADT sign in your front yard is a good bet if you want to know you’re protected (and want other people to know it, too).
It's no question that ADT is one of the more popular alarm systems. I am now planning on purchasing a new home and doing my research on home security systems and ADT keeps on popping up. I'm attracted to the technology that they employ such as the Pulse app and placing an ADT sign in front of my new house will surely deter to-be robbers. Thanks for sharing the review, do you recommend ADT as the best home security system currently on the market?
One of the main reasons SimpliSafe took first place is that while you don’t have to sign up for professional monitoring, you have the option if you want it. There aren’t any contracts, so you can turn on the alarm monitoring for one month if you’ll be going on a long vacation and turn it back off when you get back. SimpliSafe also makes it easy to customize your system. You can always add new equipment to your setup if you decide you want more motion sensors or an extra wireless keypad for your garage.
I agree with Jan. Security systems are not like a cell phone that you need the 'latest new gadget' every 2 or 3 years. If you get a quality system it can last 10+ years, just make sure you adapt to any big changes. There have really only been a few large leaps in alarm technology. 1) When it went from wired to wireless in later 90's. 2) When it went from land line to cellular towers in 00's. 3) Automation which really is a separate market and niche although closely related. Hope that helps in your decision making!
The crew was knowledgeable, professional, and made sure that I understood what was being installed and how to use it. By the time they left, I had everything up and running, had been personally tutored in its use, and had set up basic accounts and access credentials for the main system, the web portal, the remote monitoring software, and the third-party equipment ADT installed for me.
If you’re renting or leasing, it may make a difference in whether you want a wireless setup or not. Wireless systems don’t require drilling, which your property owner may appreciate. But if you do end up needing to drilling, here’s a fun fact: in most cases you need only verbal permission from your landlord, so you won’t have to come up with a written agreement or anything like that.
A good review post! I have been in this industry for many years and along with using many different companies so far (both at home and work) I've come back around to ADT. It's a long story but I got hosed when my small boutique moved and I was using a local security company that was charging me an arm and a leg to move and upgrade so I went back to ADT pulse after paying their cancellation fee and I'm able to use it at both my Home and Business with a discount too.

Odds are you don’t have to walk far down your street to spot an ADT yard sign. That’s because American District Telegraph is the largest – and the oldest – home security provider in the US and Canada. The sheer size and capital enable ADT to offer a broader range of services than its competitors. You can choose from wireless or hardwired systems, and even connect security systems from other companies to ADT monitoring centers. ADT security highlights include video surveillance, invasion detection, home automation with voice recognition, environmental protection, and medical pendants with GPS tracking.
ADT monitoring has yet to let me down even with my little kids around the home. I only got a basic security system so I can't really compare or say it's better than "X" company but definitely works for a mother of 4 who wants some added peace to her life! My husband is gone a lot and he likes being able to check what's going on in and outside of the home thru the Pulse monitoring app. This is how I got him to buy the system for us in the first place ;).
I tested ADT Pulse (starting at $28.99 per month plus components and installation), which combines the company's alarm and security service with home automation and monitored surveillance. ADT easily rivals its top competitors, including Vivint Smart Home, in functionality, though if you opt for the top of its service tiers as I did, you might want to prep yourself for sticker shock. Even so, ADT Pulse earns our Editors' Choice for home security systems.
Vivint is all about home automation and state-of-the-art technology. If you’re into things like controlling your lights, door locks, security cameras, and pretty much anything else under your roof that can connect to your smartphone, then Vivint’s alarm systems are worth heavy consideration. The company is starting to design more and more of its own equipment, so it doesn’t rely as much on third-party vendors as Frontpoint or ADT do. The Vivint Doorbell Camera is one of our favorite pieces of security equipment to date.
When I lived at home with my mother we had the ADT system and never had a problem, no break-ins, and no potential break-ins either. Unfortunately, I did not follow suit and get the system when I moved out on my own and my apartment was burglarized this past year. I feel like if I would have had the system there is NO WAY my apartment would have been broken in to. These systems really do thwart robbers from entering.
I was renting a house in the countryside in North Carolina. The landlord contacted ADT to install a new alarm system in the house. The previous system was no longer covered by anyone. The install was quick and complete. The only problem being the hall motion detector which they said shouldn’t pick up the movement of a 30# elderly dog, but routinely did. They disabled that sensor and didn’t have any more issues. Whenever there was an issue, they were quick to respond via phone and on one occasion had the police meet me at the house when a true alarm came in.
ADT offers pretty much everything in the realm of home security, so just about anybody could find want they want from the company. If you need a simple setup, we suggest getting your doors and windows alarmed with Basic Wireless. If you want something to make your life a little easier (and cooler), we recommend the ADT Pulse setup so you can control just about everything in your house. If you want to be absolutely secure, it’s worth investing in ADT security cameras and video surveillance on top of the basic package.
New service phone calls to the company may result in a transfer to a company known as Protection 1. Earlier in 2016, ADT announced its acquisition by asset management company Apollo which also owns Protection 1. The two companies, in essence, are now “merged”. Protection 1 serves customers out of ADT’s service region, and vice versa. However, ADT may not mention this relationship before transferring you.
Worst experience ever. Unreliable and irresponsible service. Even for urgent matters you have to wait on line for at least 30 minutes. And because ADT Canada was not able to pick up my phone call within a few minutes as stated clearly to me the police was dispatched. When you tried to explain no one at ADT cares to take any responsibility. I have been with ADT for almost 10 years and they will not consider your loyalty if something goes wrong. I decided to leave this company. Even your alarm goes off now you will be asked to press 1 then 2 then ……. and wait forever. Think twice if you want professional and timely service.
Want to save on your next order from ADT Security? Here are a few hot tips: first, check Groupon Coupons for the latest deals! Then, while you're shopping with ADT Security, sign up for emails if you can. This is an easy way to get alerts about promotions without having to hunt them down. Backup System: If your power goes down or your phone line is cut, this backup system will kick in. Alarm systems also come with a backup system, which can keep your alarm going for up to 72 hours by using battery power. If your home uses Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone system, backup systems are crucial because a lot of alarm systems aren’t compatible with this. Alternatively, if you provide cell phone backup, this will allow the monitoring company to get in touch with you via this.
The customer rep offered me to re-schedule another appointment and I said I don’t think so, do you want to reschedule another time to waste my entire morning and get upset. I have never had a problem so far with our alarm system, but dealing with this kind of poor business, especially for a new or additional business from a customer did not seem to be their priority.
As stated, ADT supports a wide variety of other devices, including not just lights but also appliances and garage door openers. I didn't install anything on my garage door as it's essentially a large storage unit right now so I simply want to keep it locked. It's important to note that if I had wanted ADT to automate it, the company wouldn't have installed a new garage door opener, but just a Z-Wave controller that would allow me to remotely operate the opener using Pulse. This is a similar procedure for how ADT will automate your home's other appliances, should you opt for it. What's nice is that aside from remote operation, you can schedule events with most automated devices and appliances, so your home can literally perform basic tasks, like turning the heat up and down for your departure and return after a trip, letting the cleaning crew in Tuesdays at noon if you're away, and turning the front porch light on just before you get home from work every night.
The Blink cameras are equipped with built-in sensors that are triggered by motion. When they detect an intruder's movement, the alarm goes off, an alert is sent to your smartphone, and a short video clip of the alarm event uploads to Blink’s cloud storage so you can see what set it off. The best part: You get all this security goodness for no monthly fee.
Also, don't expect ADT to listen to your complaint. You won't get past helpdesk support. They suggest you write a letter if you want to speak to anyone higher that helpdesk. A LETTER!, what century does this company live in. They must all drive to work using a Horse and Buggy. I knew at that point this wasn't the type of company that could provide me with the type of advanced security system you would expect in the 21st century.
The only issues I've had were with an errant temperature sensor and the outside camera. The senor decided to send an alarm very early on a Sunday and then threw itself into a noisy loop. Customer service was on the phone as soon as I called, however, and walked me through bypassing that sensor until a repair technician could come to the house. That part was great. The part where the technician didn't know where the sensor was or even why it would have been installed wasn't so great. Still, he simply deleted it from the system and now at least the house is quiet, though somewhere there's the tiny corpse of a sensor rotting away for no good reason.
I just got rid of m ADT system. It was installed onOctober 1st and in the four months I had it, I had at least 14 service calls to fix broken or non-functioning equipment and more calls from them telling me that a window was open when it was not. The window in question has not been opened over 25 years. And every time they would call about my “open window”, it would make the alarm impossible to set because it required over-riding that window. I got a call from an ADT representative telling me they were receiving an alarm from my system. I was standing right next to the alarm when she called and I said “If the alarm was going off, shouldn’t I be hearing it.” She said “Absolutely”.... Read More
Today my husband discovered the source! Someone (probably me) had accidentally activated a notification on the satellite radio to beep every time a particular artist was playing on one of the channels! We are happy and relieved to know that a) it is not ADT, b) that we can set up satellite radio to do just that, but c) if we had known about this ability we would certainly not have chosen Beyonce!!!
That's a very valid argument in ADT's favor. Moving on to different states or cities is sometimes inevitable for many, which means if your security company doesn't have a nation-wide reach, then there can be some really unnecessary hassles involved with your moving. A lot of bad blood can be avoided by going with old guys like ADT, which covers the entire nation in its length and breadth. Good points!
ADT’s Traditional package is its most basic. A bit pricier than the baseline options offered by competitors, it packs a punch. A $125 upfront equipment fee provides you with wireless keypad entry, so you do not have to worry about entrance into your home. The basic package comes with a $28.99 monthly monitoring fee that includes 24/7 professional monitoring using a cellular connection. It comes with four door and window sensors (with the option to upgrade), and offers fire, carbon monoxide, and flood monitoring services. As noted, this is a significant amount of monitoring for a basic package.
