Installation: Some companies offer professional installation while others send you equipment to install yourself. Both options are fine—it really comes down to personal preference. Most companies that offer professional installation don’t charge huge installation fees, and some companies that have you install equipment yourself still charge activation fees.

Security Camera Surveillance: You can choose to add a video camera and monitor to your system so you can catch thieves in the act if they do choose to break into your home. Or, you may want to up the ante by installing a complex closed circuit television (CCTV) which features digital recorders, multiple operators, and several cameras. Some systems will also alert you by text if they detect anything, allowing you to log in on your smartphone to view the footage.
1 week ago I agreed on the price I would pay monthly for the alarm service with ADT. The installer came today and the prices of what we had talked on the phone were very, very different, but the surprise was that when the installer came to my house she began to uninstall the existing alarm system and after all that she tells me that the price was different from the one I had agreed on by phone so therefore I canceled the service and had the old alarm system reconnected

My father, age 75, contacted ADT to switch to their service based on an advertised offer. He explained to the customer service representative he had Vonage for his phone service. The customer service rep. said she was not sure if the system could be installed without a landline. She scheduled the appointment and told my father to ask the technician. I seems odd that the customer service representative could not speak to my father’s situation, since it is not uncommon. As directed,my father asked the technician about installing the service with Vonage. He further explained the package he was expecting to be installed. The technician stated “I got you”. The technician then proceeded to install a thousand dollar system. When my father would not agree to the monthly payment, the technician got his supervisor on the phone to apply more pressure. When my father would not agree to pay the monthly fees associated with the system installed, the supervisor directed the technician to take the system out. The technician removed the ADT equipment but refused to reconnect my father’s existing equipment. Now my father has to pay for a service call and reinstallation of his previous service. My father is on a fixed income and does not have money to spare. I am thankful the he has his wits about him and did not yield to undue sales pressure. Shame on you ADT!!!!
I had service with ADT for a number of years. During that time, I had one minor kitchen fire and incorrectly entered my alarm code one time. I was able to put a lid over the pan to extinguish the fire, but ADT called almost before I had done that. The night I entered my security code incorrectly, I went straight into the shower and didn’t hear them calling. (Living in a condominium, I had a silent alarm.) By the time I finished my shower, the police were at my door.Fortunately, those were the only two times the alarm went off, but I was impressed with how quickly ADT responded. I had shopped around before getting the system installed, and they were also offering a very competitively priced package.
For “smart” alerts you’ll need a NEST Aware subscription. The basic plan, which is the most popular option, costs around $10 per month. It comes with an advanced algorithm that fine-tunes the camera’s detection skills for identifying faces, voices and dog barking. I contacted ADT twice. The first time simply as a customer, since I'd just moved into a new house and wanted a full home security system. ADT sales recommended its Remote tier, and I agreed, though there are other tiers to be had (see below). I also investigated SimpliSafe, but had a not-great experience with its customer service, and was heading back to ADT when the opportunity arose to review the Pulse system for PCMag.

Glenn Kurtzrock, a criminal defense attorney and former homicide prosecutor, told us that based on his experience, most burglars “go for the master bedroom and won’t waste time in rooms like a kid’s room.” He explained that “burglars don’t like to spend a lot of time in a house regardless of whether there’s a security system” so will prioritize the rooms most likely to have cash, jewelry, or small electronics. Having a video camera that films the entrance to your master bedroom can help provide video evidence for the police should a crime occur.
ADT offers a lot beyond basic home security (like medical alert monitoring), but the company charges extra for safety essentials like smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring, which other security companies include. You also have to upgrade for an extended warranty if you select either of the Basic packages. We’d like to see ADT cut their customers a break and create some affordable package options that include smoke and CO2 alerts along with a good, solid warranty for all plans.
ADT made some changes to the Pulse app in early 2018. While the UI seems to have gotten a little friendlier, which is always welcome, it temporarily removed one important feature that I missed: cloud storage for my camera view. The camera doesn't have a great track record of performance (see below), but when it worked, I liked having the 30-second clips of whatever video it took available for viewing through the Pulse app. That's been moved to an easily-missed "Clips" button, so be careful to examine the UI closely as new features come out or get deprecated. What you miss might not actually be gone.

A larger security company that continually monitors your home will have a designated station that watches thousands of homes and businesses at once. They cost more because they have to go through verification with the Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent, non-profit organization that specializes in testing services and products to ensure maximum reliability and safety.
ADT has the first thought name for security, but, worst to deal with. The sales tactics and the service performance is substandard. Pressuring to sign the contract…they will not let you review the it and its terms, only point to sign here. Pricing higher than anyone. The sales person kept calling me although I said not to. I suggest to never use them!!!
Probably my worst experience with any service provider in US. We put the system before relocating to England for a year. Three faulty alarms resulted in huge fees from police and ADT refused to fix it. Now we are moving for good abroad and they want to charge us $300 to cancel the service. My advice – never work with them. Once we are back this is the last company I will be contacting.

In 1984, the were renamed and ten years later passed their one-millionth customer. In 1997, Tyco International Ltd. bought them out and since then they have acquired dozens of Ma & Pa security companies as well as big ones such as Brinks and Broadview Security.

ADT utilizes a nationwide network of authorized dealers as well as their own personnel to sell, install and support ADT security system. The dealer network allows ADT to maintain a local presence for their customers while providing the stability and service capabilities of a large, national security provider. However, it can also lead to an inconsistent experience for customers and negative customer reviews. Online customer reviews typically revolve around issues with local dealers and include missed appointments, aggressive upselling and misrepresentation.


The technician explained that ADT’s broadband systems have trouble connecting to Suddenlink routers, which our tester had, so he tried a different kind of command hub. After he left, our tester noticed he was charged $190 more than his original quote. The new equipment was significantly more expensive because it worked on cellular signals instead of Wi-Fi. We wish we had known about that extra charge upfront.
