I had a representative from one of ADT's subcontracted sales companies come to my house last year in August. He gave us a whole spiel about how if he could put a sign in our yard we could get a security system for free. My husband and I both specifically asked him how long the contract was for for the monitoring monthly fee and were told that it was 1 year. We specifically asked what it would cost it us to cancel after a year and he told us it wouldn't cost us anything. He told us that when a year was up we should call and tell them we were going to switch companies and they would lower our monthly payment or we could just stop it anytime after a year.
I just got rid of m ADT system. It was installed onOctober 1st and in the four months I had it, I had at least 14 service calls to fix broken or non-functioning equipment and more calls from them telling me that a window was open when it was not. The window in question has not been opened over 25 years. And every time they would call about my “open window”, it would make the alarm impossible to set because it required over-riding that window. I got a call from an ADT representative telling me they were receiving an alarm from my system. I was standing right next to the alarm when she called and I said “If the alarm was going off, shouldn’t I be hearing it.” She said “Absolutely”.... Read More

Hello Kenneth-We apologize for the poor experience. We were able to locate the account using the information provided in this review, and see that the installation was booked with an independent ADT authorized dealer, Defender Security. We will be reaching out to them on your behalf. Should you need to reach them directly, you can do so at 1-800-689-9554. If there are any other ADT-related concerns please email ADT at AlwaysThere@adt.com. Thank you. -Gabe
Hello Nessa Ann. Defender Security is an independent authorized dealer of ADT's monitoring service. They procure and maintain their own customer base, and sell and install their own equipment. They partner with ADT, as Defender does not provide a monitoring service. Should you have any concerns regarding a recent Defender installation, they can be contacted directly at 1-800-689-9554. Should you need anything further from ADT, we would encourage you to contact us at AlwaysThere@adt.com. Thank you. -Gabe
They sit at the top of the table for a reason. Besides the legacy, their quality is unmatched by any competitor by far. I have tried numerous security systems in the past from rival companies but kept coming back to ADT and now have finally settled with them. The main pro of them is the nationwide reach and exceptional service at any point of time in the day or night. Big kudos!

Ideal for small homes and apartments, Canary keeps home security simple, anchoring it in one unassuming, but feature-packed tower: the Canary View All-in-One. The tower hosts a 1080p streaming camera with high-quality night vision (the best IP camera we encountered), a motion sensor, an air quality sensor, and a crazy-loud, 90-decibel siren. It’s like starting a lawn-mower next to your face.

ADT Pulse is the name of the system that includes a control panel, proprietary and Z-wave-compatible devices, and the interactive monitoring that includes two-way communication and video surveillance. It can control digital door locks and garage door openers. It also controls remote lights and thermostats so you can maintain the appearance that you’re home. ADT Pulse Live Video includes wireless video cameras, both indoor and outdoor, that work even in low light (night vision). You can watch this feed from private security TVs, your computer, or mobile devices. It’s all wireless, and you can control it with mobile devices like cell phones and tablets.

SimpliSafe’s wireless security system makes for a painless DIY installation. The keypad and sensors, for instance, are mounted with sticky pads, eliminating the need for drilling. Its step-by-step guide walks you through the entire process, making it relatively simple to follow along and get your system running in no time. And, if you get stuck during your installation, a customer service rep is only a phone call away.
Vivint also recently partnered with Google to offer Google Assistant voice control to customers with smart tech. Every new smart home system includes two Google Home Minis. This means that customers can adjust the smart thermostat, lock doors, and arm the system via voice commands. Using a Google Home Mini as the smart hub in your home also ensures that even non-Vivint smart devices are manageable on a single platform.

My husband and I recently had a security system and carbon monoxide monitoring system installed in our home in Radnor Township. We cannot speak more highly of the customer service we received from our technician, David, and how easily the entire process of receiving the install was. From the initial phone call to having David explain how to set the alarm, everything was conducted professionally and with the utmost attention paid to having us both understand the system. We wanted an excellent security system for peace of mind and we can, without a doubt, say that our minds are entirely at peace! Many thanks ADT!
At that point I went through ADT's PR department and was put in touch with a different representative who was unaware of my initial outreach as just another customer. What impressed me later, however, was that even though I went through the consultation twice, both were equally thorough, professional, and both representatives recommended similar core security capabilities.
ADT’s main downfalls are high monthly costs and strict contract requirements. You can pay anywhere from around per month to nearly , depending on the level of monitoring you choose and the equipment and feature add-ons you select. The company also requires a three-year contract—and if you want to opt out early you’ll have to pay 75% of your remaining contract.
DIY monitoring or self-monitoring means that when a sensor is tripped, it’s your responsibility to gauge the alert’s importance and contact the authorities. This could be potentially dangerous if you sleep through an alert that turns out to be a serious threat, but it’s generally less expensive than professional monitoring. Some home security companies like SimpliSafe offer both professional and DIY monitoring plans. If you’re interested in DIY home security, check out our favorite DIY home security systems.
While some providers outsource their monitoring to third-party dispatch centers, ADT guarantees its monitoring is done in its six dedicated command centers. Keeping monitoring in-house helps control for quality and promises the dispatchers have an understanding of your security equipment. Command centers are located nationwide and employ thousands of trained dispatch operators. And, they monitor around the clock, ensuring your home remains safe 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
However, with such a variety of services available, it can be difficult to choose one that’s going to work for your home/business and you. But thankfully, you’ve come to the right place. Below, we’ve explored all of the different factors involved in choosing a home security system, including monitored devices, wireless connections, security features, and top-rated companies.
Last year, we relocated to a new home and decided to give ADT another chance since the prior homeowner had used ADT and there was some existing equipment that we hoped to re-use. In addition to the existing equipment (sensors, etc) that we re-used, we opted to add internal and external cameras, in addition to the garage door automation feature. Shortly after installation, we encountered a few issues which, individually, weren’t a big deal and could have been shaken off if they were the only issues. We also realized that the technology was cumbersome and NOT user-friendly. For example, the internal and external cameras are on different systems and need to be accessed using two different apps. We had trouble with the app for the external cameras, and when asking if there was a way to access the cameras via an internet browser on a computer, we were informed that the app was the only means for viewing. When inquiring as to how we could view the external camera activity if the app wasn’t working, they indicated that we should hook up a monitor to the DVR system (the equipment that powers the external cameras). When installing our system, we were never advised that we should hook up a monitor to this system so that we could view activity. Additionally, this solution doesn’t solve the problem if we are attempting to view the external camera activity from a remote location. I recognize that integrating this type of technology is complicated, but the other security system provider that we had previously used was able to combine all cameras into one system which could be viewed either via app or internet browser.

I went with ADT because they were a trusted name in the industry with businesses such as banks and other companies that need reliable monitored service. That was the most important thing to me and they have never let me down. I have been with them for over 15 years and the equipment has operated well. If I wanted to have them add additional services over the years, I know that there is an installation cost but it is well below that of a general contractor. And I am sure existing customers can self install if they know how. I have worked with customer service to do alarms tests and inquire about other things and have never had a problem. I have read many of the complaints on this site and many are a result of the home owner not doing their research or expecting free services. These companies have contracts to recoup the equipment costs. They need to pay an employee to do a truck roll for installations…every time. They are not a charity service. And I should note that in over 15 years my monthly fee has only gone up once. Not bad compared to some of the others. So again, I would rather use a company that the banking industry relies on because the most important thing to me is reliability in the event of a crisis. ADT has always been there 24/7.
When relocating with ADT make sure you call them ahead of time and let them know the situation. You don't want to end up with 2 monitoring homes or contracts in place. I forgot too and then at my new house it was a headache getting things straightened out but luckily I didn't end up paying anything extra. So if you move, call them and see if they want you to keep some of the equipment or if they will put a new one in your new location (which is most common).

The reason I got ADT was so that in case I needed to move out of state for my work (a possibility at the moment) I wouldn't have to pay a early termination fee for moving 'out of service area' as I've seen with other companies contracts. I believe I'll have to pay a $199 or so moving fee but that's better then cancelling and signing up with a new company once moved.
Regardless of if you choose a month-to-month professional monitoring plan or opt to self-monitor your home, SimpliSafe requires you to purchase its equipment upfront. Though it’s less expensive than our other picks, packages start at a couple hundred dollars and go up from there. On the plus side, purchasing your equipment upfront does give you the flexibility to move or cancel your system at any time.
Every ADT-Monitored center puts an extensive network, including system professionals, on call to help protect the people and things you care about most. You can expect ADT security 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. All throughout the United States, ADT Security has a full-scale network of linked command centers strategically positioned to successfully offer continuous monitoring of your Protect Your Home-configured security system. The state-of-the-art technology integrated into this resilient, hyper-connected operation is only one of the many reasons more people choose ADT-Monitored home security over any other security monitoring company in America. We provide protection against potential hazards that maybe out of your hands including:
Bad customer service. Be careful when you sign the contract with this company. It’s a bait, always overcharge. You want to cancel! No way! You will pay for the cancel fee. A lot money. I will tell to all my friends, my family friend and the world. Don’t trust and don’t use this company. I’m sure I will never stay with this company after my contract. Liar and cheaters!
If we are counting rankings then my vote is 4/5. I just got them cause I felt I knew them best. My family had ADT growing up and so I followed suite. I didn't really compare it to other companies so can't say I know ADT is #1 or anything but the tech that installed our system did it quick and they showed us how to work it. Their pulse app took some getting used to as I don't really care for a "smart" home and I usually end up using the key remote they got me instead of my phone.
I am very upset with my ADT experience and contract. Your sales rep Daehan J gave me inadequate information regarding your ADT service and contract. I was very upfront and concerned about switching from Safenet to ADT because I was planning on moving the following year. He ASSURED me that the move of equipment, install and monitoring fees would not incur additional charges! He also did NOT disclose that there was a 36 month contract or an early termination fee. If I was properly informed of incurring additional charges for my move, I would NOT have switched security companies as my contract with Safenet was complete. In order for me to set up a new security monitoring system at my new place of residence, I received an estimate for $461. I discussed with Brad B, another sales rep of ADT corporate and he did help bring down the price but not after over 3 hours of 6 different customer services representatives. I am not pleased with your company nor ADT. Even though Daehan was working for an “authorized ADT dealer”, he is still representing the ADT BRAND.
ADT Security Systems offers great introductory packages to help you get started with securing your home. The Video package is a little more expensive than the Traditional but it comes with free installation, tons of home automation features, and a 6-month money back guarantee. However, if you decide to go with ADT Security Systems, you must sign a 36-month contract, and you run the risk of dealing with its poor customer service, high cancellation fees, and costly service visits.
The customer rep offered me to re-schedule another appointment and I said I don’t think so, do you want to reschedule another time to waste my entire morning and get upset.  I have never had a problem so far with our alarm system, but dealing with this kind of poor business, especially for a new or additional business from a customer did not seem to be their priority.
I purchased an ADT home security plan through a door to door salesman. The setup and service were quick. Beside the home security update, I also get the camera doorbell and a motion sensor camera for my backyard. They both worked as expected until the last couple of months until I started to notice that the backyard camera no longer recorded and saved on the motion in the radius that is supposed to like it used to. It only saved when there is a bad (windy, storm, etc.) weather and "hit" the camera. A month or 2 later, the camera doorbell also stopped working even after I tried to reset it a few times. They quickly scheduled a tech guy to come out and tried to fix the issues. The doorbell working properly again, however, he wasn't able to fix the backyard motion sensor and wasn't sure on what could cause the issue.
I had a security system with ADT. It got quite annoying having to call them every 2 months to figure out why I was paying $1, $3, $5 more every few months. They told me my rates were locked in, what they didn't tell me was my account was being sold to another monitoring company thus raising my rates. Than I found out from another company that all the equipment I paid top dollar for was proprietary to ADT. After doing more research I learned that they bought a manufacturing alarm company called DSC.
ADT is one of the most well-known providers in the home security industry and it’s clear why. The company’s 24/7 professional monitoring and six dedicated command centers also help it stand out among competitors who sometimes outsource monitoring to third parties. Plus, its home automation features are a great add-on for those who want a little more control over their homes. With more than a century of expertise and millions of customers, ADT has built a reputation as an authority on home protection.
DO NOT USE ADT to protect your home. There are better services out there who will be transparent from the start. I’m beyond disappointed in ADT – for a company that has been around as long as they have you would think they would want to keep a good name rather than tarnish it. Oh well. When my contract is up in 3 years, I’ll be promptly cancelling and there will likely be better solutions on the market.
Home security has come a long way over the years, with today’s models featuring all the bells and whistles that allow for them to be fully integrated with home networking systems and smart devices. Of course you’ll want to ensure that whatever system you purchase is compatible with any mobile device you plan to use it with, but there are a few other things to consider before purchasing a smart home security system, including:
Looking at the different ADT monitoring packages, several things jump out. When you upgrade from Basic, you’ll get wireless security monitoring included with your package. Also, both ADT Pulse® packages include mobile access and alerts—giving you more control over your home and more peace of mind. And these are just a few of the differences.
