Last year, we relocated to a new home and decided to give ADT another chance since the prior homeowner had used ADT and there was some existing equipment that we hoped to re-use. In addition to the existing equipment (sensors, etc) that we re-used, we opted to add internal and external cameras, in addition to the garage door automation feature. Shortly after installation, we encountered a few issues which, individually, weren’t a big deal and could have been shaken off if they were the only issues. We also realized that the technology was cumbersome and NOT user-friendly. For example, the internal and external cameras are on different systems and need to be accessed using two different apps. We had trouble with the app for the external cameras, and when asking if there was a way to access the cameras via an internet browser on a computer, we were informed that the app was the only means for viewing. When inquiring as to how we could view the external camera activity if the app wasn’t working, they indicated that we should hook up a monitor to the DVR system (the equipment that powers the external cameras). When installing our system, we were never advised that we should hook up a monitor to this system so that we could view activity. Additionally, this solution doesn’t solve the problem if we are attempting to view the external camera activity from a remote location. I recognize that integrating this type of technology is complicated, but the other security system provider that we had previously used was able to combine all cameras into one system which could be viewed either via app or internet browser.

Never fulfilled offers at time of installing system. Put in wrong name of person living in the home. Needed supplies for system that was to be sent over a year ago and still don’t have them. Still being billed for service after cancelling service 3 months later. Scheduled an instillation for my daughters home and they never even showed up. New company offered alot more at a lesser rate. Very happy they have even come by twice since changing over to see if I have any questions. So glad I made the change.
I really like the upgrade to their Pulse smart phone control app. It makes everything much easier. Got rid of the old crummy control panel, got a sleeker one and put it in the closet and then setup sub accounts for my kids and anyone I want to access the home security system. I don't feel ripped off by their pricing although I'm skeptical that it really costs $50 a month for monitoring. I suppose they need to make their money somewhere and this is where they do.

The Federal Trade Commission charged ADT with misrepresented paid endorsements from safety and technology experts and the company is now prohibited from misrepresenting paid endorsements as independent reviews in the future. A group of ADT customers filed a federal class action suit aimed at the company’s early termination penalties and increased monitoring fees. Another suit claims ADT knows its wireless systems are easily hacked and engages in ”deceptive and misleading marketing statements.”Additionally, some ADT dealers have sued corporate claiming breached of contracts when dealers were informed in August 2002 that ADT was limiting the number of qualified accounts it would purchase.
In addition, keep an eye on your camera logs to see when they have been accessed. If you notice camera activity at odd hours or at times when you know that nobody is at home, it may be an indication that your system has been compromised. Finally, make sure your system software and all of your connected devices are up to date. Firmware updates often address security issues and can help protect your system from infiltration.
My family had ADT quite a few years back. I remember setting off the alarm on more than one occasion. First came a phone call asking for the password. As long as you could provide the password, ADT figured you belonged there. But don’t answer the phone or not remember the password, and the cops would be there in minutes. I’m not sure if someone was trying to kill me, the cops would get there fast enough, but they would probably catch a burglar. I would love to have them now, but the service is just too expensive for us.

Overall, it's been fine for my needs and I'm considering installing another external one at the rear of the house. This is something that'll require a call to ADT and an installation and service charge, but after that, the cam will be fully integrated into the Pulse system. You can even install your own hardware, if you like, though your mileage will vary as to how deeply you'll integrate with ADT's software without help from a company technician.

Monitoring was fine, a few issues with some of the equipment and conflicting answers about how to fix it. But my biggest issue is cancelling services. It is a NIGHTMARE. I’ve called repeatedly, used their chat feature, faxed and emailed trying to cancel service. Yet somehow, they keep losing my request to cancel. They tell you it’s easy to cancel if you’re under military orders to move – just provide a copy of the orders they say. But the reality is that they’ll drag their feet and make you jump through hoops for weeks. Meanwhile, my house is selling, I can’t cancel service and I’m stuck paying for an alarm system on a house I will no longer own.
I’ve called ADT for service or explaination of certain items, can say that I was pleased with the rep or the reasoning for why the issue is what it is but I have to be opened minded to quidelines and policies of a structured company. We give the rep a hard time because we want stella service be “customer is always right” but we can be horrible consumers then the rep rebuttal is on the deffensive so we will not meet that common ground.

Do not use ADT! The salesman was a fast-talking con artist. My husband and I felt pressured to sign a contract without having time to read it. The salesman lied and told us we could cancel anytime. The contract is for 36 months, and if you try to cancel, you have to pay an incredibly large sum of money! Customer service is rude and antagonistic, and the actual alarm service itself is defective. Please don’t make the mistake that we did!
The ADT Pulse system was just what I was looking for. The control and app is very fluid (meaning smooth). Camera quality is much higher than any security cameras (such as Swann or Nest) that my friends have, and then you can have one company across all your home automation platforms. Best to do it this way then having to login separate apps for your home security & cameras. Installation was quick and the tech explained everything, better than a DIY option which is becoming the trend.
I had ADT come in and have their system put in my home I had just purchased. It took 3 hours to install. They had a promotion going on with a free ring camera. But keep in mind. The home when I bought it had a security system already hard-wired into the home. Which was working. I just needed to have a security company come in and take over the system. The salesman told me they would piggy back my system. They did exactly what they said. 45 minutes after the installation was done. I tried to arm the system. It came up with multiple error codes. I called ADT and the salesman who set this up. He said the tech who installed it will call me back in 30 mins. This was a Saturday. Well no call.
If there is a lightning storm I found out ADT's security system still works for 7-10 days if the power goes out. I didn't find this out until it happened in my area but it made me happy I was with them! Luckily our power was out only 2 days but there was a lot of break ins throughout the city in those 2 days. I also learned when I called them during this time that if one of their monitoring stations goes out in a lightning storm that it automatically reroutes your monitoring to another station.

If you enjoy paying thousands of dollars to have them mount stuff all around your home just to have them months later unilaterally decide to charge you more for your monthly service then literally tell you that you either pay or go to collections...then ADT is for you. I have never dealt with such an unprofessional company, they only care about getting you in a contract where they can then charge you whatever they want without any paperwork to back up their extra charges.
If we are counting rankings then my vote is 4/5. I just got them cause I felt I knew them best. My family had ADT growing up and so I followed suite. I didn't really compare it to other companies so can't say I know ADT is #1 or anything but the tech that installed our system did it quick and they showed us how to work it. Their pulse app took some getting used to as I don't really care for a "smart" home and I usually end up using the key remote they got me instead of my phone.

I loved have the security of the ADT system. We had it in our old home before we moved! I was very secure when we were in the house and had the alarm on. I was comfortable leaving our home with the system armed and felt my home and household contents were safe. We had the system for more than 10 years and had no problems. A few battery replacements was all. They called every time we had a false alarm, which was usually our error. I loved the feature of the disarming the system but entering a trouble code. That made me feel extra secure. ADT kept my family safe and our house secure.

Though it’s less expensive than our other picks, packages start at a couple hundred dollars and go up from there. On the plus side, purchasing your equipment upfront does give you the flexibility to move or cancel your system at any time.

They will not stop their auto payment system and are overcharging us too. They will not stop their services until I respond to a email that came 1 week after my first call but I didn't see it before it expired. We are being charged more than contract price too. When I called again today, just like my first attempt, I was in hold for over 20 minutes. Again, I was told to expect an email and respond to it before they will cancel their auto pay. WHY SHOULDN'T THEY STOP THEIR SYSTEM? I told my wife that I guess we will have to close our bank account and move our money someplace else!

You won’t find any entry sensors with Canary, so it’s not great for homes with many access points (multiple doors and ground-floor windows), though it does have the ability to sync with multiple Canary cameras to form a web of video security. If you’re living in an apartment, and primarily need security cameras for home surveillance, the tower’s 145-degree lens should cover the majority of your living space.
The reason I got ADT was so that in case I needed to move out of state for my work (a possibility at the moment) I wouldn't have to pay a early termination fee for moving 'out of service area' as I've seen with other companies contracts. I believe I'll have to pay a $199 or so moving fee but that's better then cancelling and signing up with a new company once moved.

I really liked knowing we had the added security. But when you have cats and radiators for heat, it is a fail waiting to happen. The cats get in the window for the sun and warmth, so it sets off the alarm. Then they like to lay on the radiators, which are under the windows, and it seems they touch the window and set off the alarm. Good security, lousy for pet owners.

We have been ADT customers, since ADT took over Broadview/Brinks. Today March 27th 2014, we had our 15y old system upgraded. Our field technician and ADT employee named xxxxxxx gave us outstanding service today. He was professional and knowledgeable, patient with my questions. His answers were complete and at a level that I could understand. We have not always been as fortunate to have such a high level of service, with the company we had before ADT. It is a refreshing experience to encounter someone who is interested in good customer service and makes certain the job is completed correctly before he leaves. You need to “clone” this individual! He is an exceptional example of the type of employee that gives superior ROI to the company he works for.

If part of the appeal to DIY is the ability to cut corners and keep costs down, then Abode’s luxury may feel like a step in the wrong direction. At nearly triple the cost of Frontpoint, it’s basically the Bentley of DIY home security systems. That said, our exceptional experiences with the system made us fall in love with it, high price tag and all.
There are several steps you can take to make sure your home security system is safe from malicious cyber intruders. For starters, replace the system's default password with a unique one that contains a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. If possible, change your password from time to time. Additionally, make sure your home network is secure. Check the security settings on your wireless router, and consider models that add an extra layer of software protection, like the Bitdefender Box 2.

For “smart” alerts you’ll need a NEST Aware subscription. The basic plan, which is the most popular option, costs around $10 per month. It comes with an advanced algorithm that fine-tunes the camera’s detection skills for identifying faces, voices and dog barking. This would not be an issue if the reset time wasn’t so RIDICULOUS; 5 minutes!?! This might be acceptable for a cheap stand-alone camera, but ADT is supposed to be a SECURITY vendor. Its widely known any time you see a camera and an ADT logo on the house, you just need to toss something in front of the camera, and then come back 30 seconds later. You now have 4:30s to do whatever you want, and if that’s not enough time, just repeat the same process. How embarrassing to say the least.

ADT made some changes to the Pulse app in early 2018. While the UI seems to have gotten a little friendlier, which is always welcome, it temporarily removed one important feature that I missed: cloud storage for my camera view. The camera doesn't have a great track record of performance (see below), but when it worked, I liked having the 30-second clips of whatever video it took available for viewing through the Pulse app. That's been moved to an easily-missed "Clips" button, so be careful to examine the UI closely as new features come out or get deprecated. What you miss might not actually be gone.

Actually, Jean's concerns are valid. I had spoken with ADT about this recently after purchasing their cameras. Apparently, the cameras are motion-activated and will only record for 30 seconds. Afterwards, the camera goes through a 4-minute resetting period before it can record again. Technically, an intruder can walk into a camera's view (thus activating the camera) then walk away and wait 30 seconds for it to finish recording. Afterwards, the intruder will have 4 full minutes to do whatever they want before the camera starts to record again. That's plenty of time to break in and out, and the only clues you'll have is footage of someone walking by. I ran this scenario by an ADT rep and they were stumped. The rep than told me that ADT does, allegedly, offer cameras that record constantly, but they require additional equipment and cost upwards of $350 per camera. Sorry, not gonna happen. For $350, I can buy 4 cameras at Home Depot and have them stream to an external hard drive. Don't get me wrong, I love ADT's window and door monitors, but the cameras are for the birds. I'll be replacing my ADT cameras with third party cameras that actually record 24/7.
Many times agreed to vist me, let’s say Wednesday morning so I decided to stay and wait just to receive a call that afternoon to reschedule. Can you believe it? Not even explaining/apologizing first. Sensors falling and activating the alarm causing the cops to come to finally find out that the sensor simply fall from the double face tape it was holding it. Yes, double face tape. Also, if you move in the middle of the 3 years contract, you are not allowed to continue the agreement at the new address. You need to start 3 years again or pay the whole remaining months. I WOULD NEVER GO BACK OR RECOMMEND ADT.
ADT’s use of local vendors creates some inconsistencies with customer experience. Not every area will have the same equipment or pricing options, and local vendors vary greatly with transparency of pricing and other information. However, even with these inconsistencies, millions of people still choose ADT to protect their homes because it has a long track record of keeping people safe.
The only issues I've had were with an errant temperature sensor and the outside camera. The senor decided to send an alarm very early on a Sunday and then threw itself into a noisy loop. Customer service was on the phone as soon as I called, however, and walked me through bypassing that sensor until a repair technician could come to the house. That part was great. The part where the technician didn't know where the sensor was or even why it would have been installed wasn't so great. Still, he simply deleted it from the system and now at least the house is quiet, though somewhere there's the tiny corpse of a sensor rotting away for no good reason.
In the end, I wouldn’t say they are a scam, but I would say they are highly overpriced for what you get, and they seem to want to take advantage of any situation they can (single females, older people, parents who aren’t willing to have a weapon in the home).  The techs didn’t seem to be the most knowledgable either.  I’ve since spoken with SecureWatch who has guaranteed enough sensors for all of my doors (not just some) and several windows on the back of my house (all I really wanted) for only the $99 install fee plus taxes! Their monthly rate for the same service is also $5 less a month.  The tech has already been out to check out the house and see what I need and made some very helpful suggestions about security in general.  He didn’t try to upsell everything in his vehicle either.

If you like the idea of DIY installation and customization, but would prefer the peace of mind of professional assistance. Frontpoint’s steeper monthly rate also comes with “Crash and Smash” protection, which alerts security operators if your system goes offline. A life-saving feature if a thief tries to disable your alarm by unplugging or smashing your control panel.
Just canceled my alarm monitoring as of 10/29/2018 'cause they were ripping me off at $42 a month! I have an old BHS-4000A alarm system that was installed 10 years ago which can function independently, non monitored, and as a stand alone unit. Found out the hard way that ADT locks down your entire alarm system when you cancel!! I can't even use it as a stand alone alarm!! Even ADT's phone number shows up on the keypad display to call them!! These scumbags at ADT are holding my alarm, that I own, hostage!! It's all over the internet that they do this! 'Security' company my **!! Stay away from this company! They are not in the business to protect you, just their own wallet! Hey ADT, want to change my mind? Unlock my alarm!

That said, if you choose to cancel after its 15-day trial period you will have to pay 100% of your three-year contract. But if you like Protect America’s service, this won’t affect you. While we haven’t had an opportunity to test Protect America’s equipment for ourselves yet, we’re impressed with its DIY installation, variety of affordable plans, and free equipment.
With a founding date of 1874, ADT is probably the most mature player in the smart home security market. While it's still building the home automation portion of its services portfolio, its Pulse system is both secure and sophisticated. But while the company does a great job treating its customers well on a service front, it's important to note that the Pulse system is neither DIY or cheap.
I know a lot of people complain about the $99 installation fee but trust me, if you have ever tried to install one for the first time...$99 is a cheap price to pay! I wish I would have paid someone to install mine for me. It was a headache to do! Anyways, I'm with ADT and it's a great system for my family. Never had a issue them and I don't have a problem with their equipment. It does the job!

Are the burglers smart enough to cut the TV cable? I use VOIP, which ADT can connect to, because I had them do that at a home I had in California. Having them use the cell chip is the smarter way. I thought because I had bad cell phone service my burglar alarm system would too but the technician taught me that they use a variety of cell tower signal strength (compared to just 1 that my phone uses) and there is never any outage. Cell monitoring is the way to go and most companies don't even offer land line service although ADT still will if you ask them too.
