Vivint has been around since 1999 and is known for its cutting-edge technology. We like the company’s automation features in particular. All of the systems we considered offer some basic features, but Vivint’s were the easiest to use. With the SkyControl panel, Glance display, or mobile app, you can change the temperature on your thermostat, turn your lights on or off, and even have two-way conversations through your security cameras.
A few min later he comes to me and tells me he’s got bad news and all my stuff is out date. (i thought that was pretty fun because I had looked in the box downstairs before calling and the inside cover clearly had a sticker on it stating it was install about 10 months earlier) I played along… He did his little sales pitch about giving me better stuff and blah blah then he says it’s like $700 to replace what I had as he’s shoving paperwork & a pen at me. I told him he was out of his mind! So then he tells me he’s gonna call his boss and see what he can do, a few minutes later he tells me he can give it to me for free. At this point I’m totally weirded out by the guy and told him I needed time to think and could I call him later. He got totally indignit with me and couldn’t understand what my problem was and that it was free. I asked him to leave and he sat down at my kitchen table! I tried to be very polite but he wouldn’t get up he said he was gonna see what else he could work out or something ridiculous. I left the room and called my neighbor who came over and removed the man from my house. It was absolutely insane!
So since the guy was already there i was friendly and greeted him but explained i had canceled and was no longer looking for security at the moment due to some issues. He stated he couldn't leave until his boss gave him permission. His boss(ADAM) was very rude and told him to just leave the security system on my counter and to leave and that i wasn't receiving a refund (YET I DIDN'T EVEN RECEIVE INSTALLATION NOR DID HE EVEN TAKE OUT THE SYSTEM OUT OF HIS CAR) When i told him(Adam) My husband was on deployment and wasn't moving in until January ADAM kept pushing it on me after telling him NO several times. He states he already had a cancellation and couldn't receive another cancellation for the day. THAT IS NOT MY PROBLEM. They instillation person was very nice but stayed at my house (inside) for 2 hours. I Had to speak to 4 different people just to cancel and have the tech person to leave. It was the worst experience of customer service i have EVER experienced. ADT does not care about you only their money. WILL NEVER RECOMMEND TO ANYONE!!!! SCAM
All in all, it's hard to go wrong with the trusted blue and white. Competitors still lack the brand name and good reputation that ADT has built over the past century. Being able to move anywhere in the USA and not pay a cancellation fee is a big plus. Great equipment, and a company that still installs the security system, they are our top recommendation for the average of a homeowner.

When my contract with ADT expired, I contacted the company to disconnect my service, which they did, but they continued taking the monthly payment from my checking account. When I contacted the company, they advised that they owed me $424.23, and that they would reimburse. That was EIGHT years ago, and I haven’t gotten a cent. I’ve contacted the company numerous times, and they give me different stories each time. They’ll tell me that they sent the money to Illinois unclaimed funds- which they hadn’t, I checked. Recently, I spoke with a representative of ADT, followed up by a manager. The rep stated that she has numerous notes showing my attempts to get MY money back. The manager basically said that I was owed the money, and after a brief hold, advised that they owed me nothing. It’s been 8 years!! I think I’ve been more than accommodating. I’ve also kept notes, recording dates, times, names, and the info discussed. ADT you’re the theif that I need protection from.
After installation, if something goes wrong with your system, call customer care or chat online with an operator. If ADT can’t troubleshoot remotely, a technician will be sent within five days to service your system. There is a $25 service visit charge with the Quality Service Plan (QSP) or $150 for the first half hour if you’re not covered; it’s free within the first 90 days.
I have ADT at my home and I really like it…THey are quick to call me if there is any trouble and they will come out and fix anything that is out of whack. I would recommend them to anyone for the response time and the security feel.The only issues I have had with them are the window alarms dont get them if you dont want to go home everytime it thunders..wow that was nuts..And the price seems to be a little steep..But I will keep them for my familys peace of mind..
The camera's auto-record function is based on motion sensors tuned to ignore small animals. The cam will record a 30-second video clip, then pause for four minutes before it records again. Auto-recorded clips are stored in ADT's Pulse cloud and can be accessed via the Pulse app. The camera operates at 720p resolution and you can record either a manual video or a still snapshot using the Pulse mobile app. All video clips, your own or the ones the camera takes automatically, are stored in ADT's cloud for 30 days. If you want to download anything to save long-term, it's doable, but only using the ADT web portal, not the mobile app. All this functionality comes with your Pulse service contract, none of it costs extra. I'm fortunate enough to live in a house I spent a lot of time in while growing up. It has an old security system that hasn't had service for years. I remember watching a crew of installers come and drill holes into doors, window frames, and fish wire through the drywall for the motion detectors. It took two people an entire day and many tools to install the now-archaic system.
I like that my rate hasn't risen in the past 5 years I have been with ADT. I just called in to upgrade to Pulse and it took alittle bit of figuring out with the customer support but I got it and I only have to pay another 1 time fee for the technician to come and replace my panel and add some new equipment. I'm really excited for it and their cameras are top notch from the research and comparison I have done.
While most providers give you the option to add both indoor and outdoor cameras to your security package, SimpliSafe’s selection is limited to one indoor surveillance camera. If there is a lightning storm I found out ADT's security system still works for 7-10 days if the power goes out. I didn't find this out until it happened in my area but it made me happy I was with them! Luckily our power was out only 2 days but there was a lot of break ins throughout the city in those 2 days. I also learned when I called them during this time that if one of their monitoring stations goes out in a lightning storm that it automatically reroutes your monitoring to another station.

The cons are camera occasionally struggles to stream 720p and WeMo functionality broken out into separate app.
Frontpoint requires a professional monitoring subscription plus a three-year contract. Monitoring plans range from $35 to $45 to $50 per month, each ascending tier unlocking additional features like home automation, mobile alerts, and camera storage. While not as flexible if you want to take a minimalist or independent approach to security, but appealing if you want the extra perks.
Even though ADT offers home automation, it’s only included with the Premium Protection with Pulse package. This can be frustrating since home automation is a major selling point for most home security providers. The Premium Protection with Pulse package’s starting price is also pretty costly. I talked with a representative about a home security system. As we talked she asked me questions regarding number of windows/doors etc. She told me we would get window/doors sensors (never actually told me how many my mistake for not asking), also told me it wasn't a problem to include an extra key fob and the really great news was we were going to have all this "free" money to purchase anything else we wanted off the service truck. Salesman and installer arrive and we find out that extra key fob was coming out of our "free" money the representative never ever mentioned this fact.
In my initial consultation, the representative recommended only alarm hardware, but that was because I was still stunned by what I'd paid for the house, so I was trying to save money by avoiding home automation equipment. My second consultation was to review the Pulse system, which meant home automation was part of the assignment. Frankly, knowing what I know now, I would have opted for the home automation equipment even if I was just a regular customer. Yes, there's a price difference as you'll see in the next section, but for my money it's worth it.
ADT Pulse is not a fully compatible z-wave system as they exclude many sensors that would make the system attractive for home automation. Reason for the limited functionality seems to be nefarious, i.e. trying to support their outdated business model relying on high price installer that sell overpriced. The system has potential but they need to get everything in order.
We required all systems have Z-Wave Support — the most universal mesh network for communicating appliance to appliance. One of the biggest draws of a DIY system is the opportunity to add in third-party equipment (like Philips Hue lights or a Nest Thermostat) at any point. A Z-Wave compatible system can connect 1,700 home security and automation products from more than 450 companies. Plus, you have flexibility in where you place various devices because Z-Wave can communicate farther distances than competitor networks.
2018 update: Security giant Protection 1 has purchased ADT for yet another buyout. However, they will be keeping the brand name the same since it is such a big company. Protection 1 will be merging their residential customers over to ADT and use the Protection 1 brand for businesses and the ADT for residential. If you are a current customer do not worry, your monitoring fees and services are not going to change.
Look for a model that offers a high resolution (1080p), a wide angle lens (140 to 180 degrees), a night vision range up to 25 feet, and affordable cloud storage for recorded video. Sometimes it's helpful to be able to see what happened just before or after a visitor approaches your door. For that, you'll need a doorbell that uses pre-buffering to record the action taking place before motion is detected or the doorbell is pressed.
I have experienced ADT security at several different places I have lived. The customer service reps are very professional and helpful. We experienced one bad experience where the alarm was going off for some technical reason but we received the phone call and the alarm sent the police to our house. It was a big mess but the only time that ever happened and considering the rest of the time our customer service was exceptional so we kind of over looked the one bad experience.
I am extremely disappointed with ADT billing department. I have had an account at my house for four years. I set one up for my dad's house last week. I told them several times this is not a replacement setup and that I need security at both homes. Come to find out they disconnected my service. They did not call me to see if they were correct in doing so, they just did it. One account is setup under my dad's name and the other under mine. I am just the person to call for emergencies and the one controlling the systems. ADT, how and why did you screw this up?
I agree with most of the people here. ADT is the undisputed king when the talk is about home security. I have myself experienced their wonderful service on many occasions and still doing after 5 years of subscribing to an ADT plan. I'm a firm believer in a no-nonsense approach and so I prefer those companies too which follow the same policy. Without being too flashy and all, their security system gets the job done of protecting my house pretty well and that too without making much damage to my pocket. What more do I want...
Frontpoint requires a big commitment after its 30-day trial: a 36-month contract. If within three years, your housing situation or security priorities change, it could cost 80% of your remaining contract to cancel. However, Frontpoint also makes a big commitment to you. Its equipment comes with a matching three-year warranty, while the rest of the DIY industry caps at one year.
Probably my worst experience with any service provider in US. We put the system before relocating to England for a year. Three faulty alarms resulted in huge fees from police and ADT refused to fix it. Now we are moving for good abroad and they want to charge us $300 to cancel the service. My advice – never work with them. Once we are back this is the last company I will be contacting.
What this service contract, termination clause, and pricing structure really tell me is that ADT isn't for apartment dwellers. If you're operating on a lease and your lifestyle means you'll be hopping residences for the foreseeable future, I don't think ADT is your best bet. I'd use Vivint or SimpliSafe, or one of the better DIY security kits, like iSmartAlarm Premium. But if you own your home and your professional life is stable enough to keep you where you are, then the termination clause really isn't an issue, and it's more about service quality as well as security and automation functionality, which are areas where ADT excels.
The technician arrived to install the system and explained how the 2-way voice works. I think I will use the Pulse App feature alot more than this but it is a good feature to have. Don't count on getting a rate at the $36.99 mentioned price, most likely it will be around $45-50 unless you do the old land line system. Either way I got a good deal and a lot of free equipment so thanks for doing this research.
