I love the pricing and information you've given on this company, but I'm a little worried about not getting new equipment after 3 years. I don't want to have to fight for new things every time my contract comes up. Does making a 'threat' to leave the company really work? I'd hate to change companies every three years to get new equipment. I'd love to hear what other customers have done. Thanks.
I have experienced ADT security at several different places I have lived. The customer service reps are very professional and helpful. We experienced one bad experience where the alarm was going off for some technical reason but we received the phone call and the alarm sent the police to our house. It was a big mess but the only time that ever happened and considering the rest of the time our customer service was exceptional so we kind of over looked the one bad experience.
Their security has a major loop-hole that could get you killed or your house could burn down and no one will ever be called. 1. If your home phone line goes down the word “communication” shows up. And that’s it. No call to secondary phones, nothing! That single word with no other warning as to what it means is all they do. That means: a home invasion break in could happen, you’re being raped or murdered or stealing all your valuables and no one is coming because no one knows. The installer came out and was polite and early. His manager showed up and seemed to rush him through everything. When setting up sensor they mis keyed motion sensor as door sensor which I caught later and had to have adt phone support fix. Then 24 hours later a window sensor fell off window. I reinstalled it and it functions as should now. When I paid for equipment I gave him credit card and I specified I wanted the monthly billing going to different card. He had both cards and whether he didn't enter is right or just didn't care it all ended up on one card. Low and behold a month later I have a hard pull showing up on my credit report. So now I have involved equifax credit bureau and have contacted defender security directly who was supposed to review things and get back to me in 24-48 via phone call and send letter via usps. After 5 days I had to call back to find out that they sent a letter and the person I was speaking to couldn't help me any further.

I had ADT for a couple of years. I did not have any issues but then again I did not have any break-ins. I wish that I would have gotten a security system in my apartment as it has been broken into twice now. ADT was easy to use, easy to pay for, which for me is a HUGE bonus. I like being in full control of where my money goes and when and this was the case with ADT. Being able to go online and change things as I see fit. The customer service reps are always efficient and polite although the hold times can get ridiculous.
I work for a company that uses ADT in our office for security. We had trouble with a couple sensors for which an ADT tech came to fix. Whatever he did completely messed up the system. We were without an alarm system for over a week because they didn’t have any techs that could come till then. Why do they not treat this as a necessity much like someone that is on 24/7 to fix your furnace if it goes out in the winter. They didn’t care that the office was with out security for over a week. As far as I’m concerned a security company that doesn’t care if you don’t have security is useless. ADT is useless. I’m looking in to Frontpoint to replace ADT in our company. My warning to those seeking ADT for your home. If they don’t care about a business they aren’t going to care about your home.
Obviously I am not alone with my red flag warning yelp review. ADT is the most known, that is why I was hellbent in getting them, but I wish I read all the reviews before. I accidentally tried to sign up with a 3rd party Protecters or Defenders, the "authorized ADT salespeople", are the sleaziest, pushy salespeople that took me hostage, almost threatening me that if I didn't sign up immediately, I couldn't ever go back to ADT. But because I did sign up with them, I could not sign up with a REAL ADT salesperson, that completely contradicted everything the ADT authorized salesperson said. An ADT salesperson said they always get complaints on the 3rd parties, because of the bait and switch, and yet you can NEVER get a REAL ADT person to quote you without taking your blood type and personal information and credit card. So I called their competitors and ALL of them were a better experience, you feel you can trust them and they want to do a good job, not just get your credit card and sign you up for a hostage contract. Although I canceled with the 3rd party, I still couldn't go with ADT, which was a blessing because I found ACS security which is far far far better, not pushy, quoted me everything, and they work directly with ASC. Don't ever go with ADT, read all the reviews. Maybe ADT will improve if they read their reviews on them. Shame on them.
Chances are if you’re thinking of a friend or neighbor’s home security system, they probably have an ADT sign out front. ADT has been considered the industry standard for home security, and although some of their stuff might not be as flashy, the equipment is solid and the monitoring aspect receives good reviews with customers (although sales and installation customer service could use some love). Plus, you can always expand your system with home automation options.
First, I have been an ADT customer for 5 years; when I was researching an upgrade to my system, I called them first. This ADT install has resulted in a 3 month debacle by ADT that has yet to be corrected. The sales representative attempted to sell me equipment I already owned (I only realized this on installation day). And...because I was wanting a higher quality camera, the installers sold me "hd bullet" cameras. These cameras needed to be ordered and a second installation date set. On the first installation date, the installers did not follow their procedures and the HVAC did not work after ADT installed the thermostats. I had to hire an electrician to come and repair the HVAC.

- I did notice a randomly occurring discrepancy where the SmartThings iOS app will, at times, say that there aren't any monitorable devices under Home Security, while other times the app will tell me the system is 'ready to arm'. Both the app and the security hub have up-to-date software so I'm not sure what's going on there. This doesn't appear to impact functionality as the security hub touchscreen will allow arming/disarming of the system in either scenario.

ADT is the worst company ever! Their business model is literally extortion. If you enjoy paying thousands of dollars to have them mount stuff all around your home just to have them months later unilaterally decide to charge you more for your monthly service then literally tell you that you either pay or go to collections...then ADT is for you. I have never dealt with such an unprofessional company, they only care about getting you in a contract where they can then charge you whatever they want without any paperwork to back up their extra charges.

I have the ADT Premier Pulse system. I got a good price on the install and the system worked. Enjoy the automation. I have added over a dozen of my own modules using the installer code. Recently I wanted to expand the system with wired camera’s. To do this requires an IP server/decoder called the NV412A-ADT. This unit costs about 75 dollars with an ADT analog camera at 250.00 installing one unit can be pretty pricey. I had analog ADT cameras from another source (ebay) much cheaper. My local ADT sales person seemed unable or unwilling to purchase the NV412’s for me. I posted on their facebook page and got a quick response. They made me advise them of the camera model numbers before they would sell me the product. My local sales person eventually just stopped trying to help. I was shocked by that. Bottom line, they wanted to do the install. I don’t need them to. Since they were not going to make any money on the deal they didn’t seem to worried about moving quickly on this issue. Very frustrating. I do love the system.

ADT has the first thought name for security, but, worst to deal with. The sales tactics and the service performance is substandard. Pressuring to sign the contract…they will not let you review the it and its terms, only point to sign here. Pricing higher than anyone. The sales person kept calling me although I said not to. I suggest to never use them!!!
Actually, Jean's concerns are valid. I had spoken with ADT about this recently after purchasing their cameras. Apparently, the cameras are motion-activated and will only record for 30 seconds. Afterwards, the camera goes through a 4-minute resetting period before it can record again. Technically, an intruder can walk into a camera's view (thus activating the camera) then walk away and wait 30 seconds for it to finish recording. Afterwards, the intruder will have 4 full minutes to do whatever they want before the camera starts to record again. That's plenty of time to break in and out, and the only clues you'll have is footage of someone walking by. I ran this scenario by an ADT rep and they were stumped. The rep than told me that ADT does, allegedly, offer cameras that record constantly, but they require additional equipment and cost upwards of $350 per camera. Sorry, not gonna happen. For $350, I can buy 4 cameras at Home Depot and have them stream to an external hard drive. Don't get me wrong, I love ADT's window and door monitors, but the cameras are for the birds. I'll be replacing my ADT cameras with third party cameras that actually record 24/7.

Jean, same here. There have been so many things NOT caught on the ADT security camera because it was outside of the 30 second recording and has to wait 4 to 5 minutes for a reset. So I had no proof the person actually did what they did even though I personally witnessed it myself. Still since it's not on camera, I have no proof as they will definitely deny it which is the reason for me getting the security camera in the first place.. I'm finding more time lapses as well, such as 30 minute gaps when there was clearly motion going on outside. Guess when that happens, it'll get blamed on the Wifi signal. There are even instances when I have a clip and/or picture, yet nothing is in view; figured the sensor caught it but it was outside of the actual viewing. So I agree with you.
What this service contract, termination clause, and pricing structure really tell me is that ADT isn't for apartment dwellers. If you're operating on a lease and your lifestyle means you'll be hopping residences for the foreseeable future, I don't think ADT is your best bet. I'd use Vivint or SimpliSafe, or one of the better DIY security kits, like iSmartAlarm Premium. But if you own your home and your professional life is stable enough to keep you where you are, then the termination clause really isn't an issue, and it's more about service quality as well as security and automation functionality, which are areas where ADT excels.
They sit at the top of the table for a reason. Besides the legacy, their quality is unmatched by any competitor by far. I have tried numerous security systems in the past from rival companies but kept coming back to ADT and now have finally settled with them. The main pro of them is the nationwide reach and exceptional service at any point of time in the day or night. Big kudos!
In February 2017, I had three cameras installed, in which one camera simply sat on my kitchen sink because the technician didn’t want to hassle with figuring out an electrical connection to set the camera up to view my swimming pool area. The front outside camera was supposed to have night vision, but it didn’t. The night vision function finally popped in surprisingly during the summer of 2018. The camera system is down almost as much as it works.
I too heard a lot about my friends and neighbors about ADT, but chose to ignore them and tried other small time companies just to save few bucks. In my quest to save few bucks here and there, I actually lost much more money and time which I could have saved by just going with the top guys in the industry. Life has been much smoother and relaxed after making a switch to ADT.
We previously had ADT and having this service provided us with a great peace of mind. We moved into a rental property approximately three years and now have no home security provider. We plan on purchasing this home and I can tell you the first thing we are going to purchase is ADT again. The only reason I gave this review a 4 star instead of 5, is because of the delay in response time when we do not respond. The Home Security Provider first calls us to confirm then calls police. By the time the police receive the alarm there is several minutes in delay. If help were needed right away, I believe it could be a little bit of a downfall – however, overall I know that my home is protected and even with a few minute delay – know that help would be on the way.
