A good review post! I have been in this industry for many years and along with using many different companies so far (both at home and work) I've come back around to ADT. It's a long story but I got hosed when my small boutique moved and I was using a local security company that was charging me an arm and a leg to move and upgrade so I went back to ADT pulse after paying their cancellation fee and I'm able to use it at both my Home and Business with a discount too.
Never fulfilled offers at time of installing system. Put in wrong name of person living in the home. Needed supplies for system that was to be sent over a year ago and still don’t have them. Still being billed for service after cancelling service 3 months later. Scheduled an instillation for my daughters home and they never even showed up. New company offered alot more at a lesser rate. Very happy they have even come by twice since changing over to see if I have any questions. So glad I made the change.
Adt has the worse customer service in the world!!!! Horrible horrible experience with them DO NOT LET THEM TAKE YOUR MONEY WHEN ITS TIME TO REFUND IT YOU WILL NEVER GET IT BACK THEY JUST KEEP ON TRANSFERRING YOU TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND PUT YOU ON HOLD AND EVERYTIME YOU’RE ON HOLD ANOTHER PERSON PICKS UP AND YOU HAVE TO EXPLAIN YOURSELF OVER AND OVER AGAIN I AM A CUSTOMER BUT I REGRET IT BECAUSE THEY DON’T TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE ON A 2-3 year contarct with them . The system itself it good but the CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE WORST OF THE WORST!!!!!!!!
ADT Security Services is the largest home security provider in the US. Compared with most other home security companies, ADT offers a wider range of services. They also have six monitoring centers nationwide that are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Protect Your Home-ADT Authorized Premier Provider provides home security equipment packages that can connect to one ADT’s monitoring centers. This helps homeowners combine the monitoring expertise of ADT with the value offered by Protect Your Home.
SimpliSafe does take a much more basic approach to security than the rest of our top five. You aren’t going to get as many bells and whistles with a SimpliSafe system. In fact, it doesn’t even use a control panel like other alarm systems. Instead, you get a central hub and tactile keypad. It’s a little old-school, but SimpliSafe is more of a function-over-fashion kind of system anyway, and it helps keep prices low.
Like any product that connects to the internet and uses wireless technology, smart home security systems are vulnerable to hacking, particularly systems that lack encryption. Hackers can sit outside your home and use a laptop and software to intercept wireless signals coming from your system that allow them to suppress alarms and disable sensors. Other devices allow hackers to generate radio noise that can jam communications between the sensors and the hub.
When it comes to home security, ADT monitoring doesn’t sacrifice quality. No matter what package you choose, rest assured that your monitored home security system will be professionally installed by a qualified technician. The best part? If you’re looking for more convenient monitoring features, you have the option to upgrade your package at any time.
We have had an ADT monitored security system in our home for more than 5 years now. We live in a relatively safe area, but I like being able to know that the house is safe when I am home alone with our young son or when we are out of town for a long weekend. The system itself is easy to activate and de-activate and we love turning the chime feature on to know whenever any door in the house is open. Some of the cons of using ADT are that if there is an issue with the system (a bad battery back up or weird beeping – which happened to us after a lengthy power outage) there can be a delay in getting a service technician to the house.
Hello Paul. We are sorry for your experience with one of our authorized dealers. Millennium Alarm Systems INC is an independently owned and operated retailer of our monitoring services. Therefore, they install / sell their own alarm equipment and are not owned by ADT. If you have any unresolved concerns with Millennium, we can reach out to them on your behalf to assist further. Thank you. -Andrew
There are several steps you can take to make sure your home security system is safe from malicious cyber intruders. For starters, replace the system's default password with a unique one that contains a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. If possible, change your password from time to time. Additionally, make sure your home network is secure. Check the security settings on your wireless router, and consider models that add an extra layer of software protection, like the Bitdefender Box 2.
There are currently six SmartThings-ADT sensors and accessories. For security, they offer a motion sensor, door/window sensor, and a keychain remote with a panic button. Professional monitoring for intrusion and panic alarms costs $24.99/month. For life safety, they have a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector, and a water leak sensor. Professional monitoring for life safety with medical and fire dispatch will set you back $14.99/month. If you want to monitor for both life safety and security events, you can combine the two services for $34.99/month.
This will depend on which option you choose. We were able to find that most, but not all, ADT packages require a landline. For an added cost, you can have the ADT Cellular Guard technology monitoring package with Remote and Video service levels. Basically, your control panel will be equipped with a cellular chip. You won’t have to choose either a landline or cellular connection—you can simply have the cellular as a backup in case something happens to your landline.
ADT offers a lot beyond basic home security (like medical alert monitoring), but the company charges extra for safety essentials like smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring, which other security companies include. You also have to upgrade for an extended warranty if you select either of the Basic packages. We’d like to see ADT cut their customers a break and create some affordable package options that include smoke and CO2 alerts along with a good, solid warranty for all plans.
Protect Your Home’s third plan is called ADT Pulse Monitoring. It costs $52.99/month, or around $13/week. In addition to everything in the previous plan, ADT Pulse Monitoring also includes Home Automation. With home automation, you can use the ADT Pulse App to stay connected to your home security system anywhere at any time. Arm and disarm your system, monitor your home and receive real-time updates and notifications while away from home.
All ADT Monitored security packages include 24/7 professional monitoring so you can feel safe and secure at your home or away. Choose the Essentials package, Total Protection package or Premium Protection package and get a $100 Visa Reward Card**. Installation starts at $99 for all ADT packages. ADT started life in 1867 when Edward A. Calahan, inventor of the stock ticker tape, created the Gold and Stock Telegraph Company and developed a messenger system to deliver instructions to and from the stock exchange. Three years later, company president Elisha Andrews awoke to a burglar in his home, which inspired him to develop a telegraph-based alert system that connected neighborhood homes to a central monitoring station. The idea immediately caught on aand over 50 home alert companies popped up throughout New York City almost immediately. In 1874, Calahan consolidated them into American District Telegraph.
Furthermore, it is interesting that the burglar was bold enough to target our house despite all the ADT signs we have posted all over and not to mention a very blatant camera in our driveway!!!! Hmmmm.. Is this an inside job? Did the tech who installed our cameras intentionally NOT setup the automation/alert features? Does ADT run background checks on their staff???
This is what I was wondering myself Andy. Thanks for sharing. I run a small apartment complex and wanted to get a reliable protection service and it looks like ADT is the only one that offers the ability to allow me to make separate logins and new pass codes. The apartments I run are 3 month leases so they are for people in between housing or moving, ect.
Also, don't expect ADT to listen to your complaint. You won't get past helpdesk support. They suggest you write a letter if you want to speak to anyone higher that helpdesk. A LETTER!, what century does this company live in. They must all drive to work using a Horse and Buggy. I knew at that point this wasn't the type of company that could provide me with the type of advanced security system you would expect in the 21st century.
A larger security company that continually monitors your home will have a designated station that watches thousands of homes and businesses at once. They cost more because they have to go through verification with the Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent, non-profit organization that specializes in testing services and products to ensure maximum reliability and safety.
As a new home owner, I made the mistake of letting myself get talked into buying a home security system by an ADT sales representative who came to my door. I am writing this review in the hope of preventing others from making the same mistake I did. The contract I now find myself in and the monthly payments I will need to make for three years is completely my own fault for making a poor decision as a consumer. I have found my ADT service to be over priced and unnecessary. My advice for new home owners: When an ADT sales representative comes to your house, don’t worry yourself over talk of bumper keys and burglaries, different contract options, and taking advantage of the new home owner “deal” before it is too late — simply don’t answer the door.
He then said he would connect me to the “presedential dept” only to come back after holding for 5 minutes to tell me that he was not going to be able to do that. He said I could contact the local supplier to discuss this further as he was trying to get me off the phone in any way possible. I already went through that channel and the local company has nothing to do with billing!
I recently received a flyer in the mail with my change of address forms from the post office with an ad for Protect Your Home advertising a “free” alarm system with 5 wireless sensors, motion, panel, and key fob with the signing of a 3 year contract. I thought, “Great!” I called the next day and spoke to a very polite sales representative and his manager and was set up to get an alarm installed that very afternoon. I specifically told him, his manager, and the scheduler that I would not be available until after 4pm.
In my time with the system, the big winners so far are ADT's Pulse software, the IP video cameras, and some third-party add-ons, namely the Nest Thermostat and the Ring Video Doorbell. I say big winners because these are the components I use daily—the house hasn't burned, been burgled, or flooded, so I haven't much needed many of the other components, but I'm glad they're there.
I had a security system with ADT. It got quite annoying having to call them every 2 months to figure out why I was paying $1, $3, $5 more every few months. They told me my rates were locked in, what they didn't tell me was my account was being sold to another monitoring company thus raising my rates. Than I found out from another company that all the equipment I paid top dollar for was proprietary to ADT. After doing more research I learned that they bought a manufacturing alarm company called DSC.
Hey Steve., Your right that the Pulse app is a big selling point for most customers. I think what she meant by that is that when the app isn't functioning; your security system still is and monitoring is working. That is the core and luckily during the Pulse app updates the primary function (being monitored 24/7 by ADT) is still in LIVE mode. Thanks and best of luck, we have heard it's back to working smoothly.
New service phone calls to the company may result in a transfer to a company known as Protection 1. Earlier in 2016, ADT announced its acquisition by asset management company Apollo which also owns Protection 1. The two companies, in essence, are now “merged”. Protection 1 serves customers out of ADT’s service region, and vice versa. However, ADT may not mention this relationship before transferring you.
When I first moved to my new place it had an alarm system in it that had an adt sticker on the box downstairs, when I called the number I instantly became leery of the overly confident man on the other end. I would buy anything over the phone so he told me he could send someone to my house to better explain things and “ease my mind”. I don’t know where they found this guy who was at my house about an hour later. He had an adt shirt on and came in and started wandering around my house looking at the equipment.
In 2017, ADT settled five class action lawsuits that claimed wireless sensors used between November 13, 2009 and August 15, 2016 were vulnerable to hacking. Claimants asserted that hackers could access a security system and disable it through certain wireless sensors used in ADT residential security systems. The suits were centered on ADT’s failure to disclose this potential liability. ADT has denied any liability and maintains that the claims have no merit. Rather than continuing litigation, the company agreed to settle and establish a million settlement fund in order to avoid the ongoing expense and uncertainty. February 26, 2018 was the deadline to file a claim in the settlement.
We had Adt and then after awhile shut it off. We recently made the decision to turn our services back on and they were amazing! The Adt crew came out to the house and updated our entire system, upgrading our keypad and walking each family member through their own pass code. They made sure we knew how to use their services to the best of our ability. We even got a remote!
I am a home automation enthusiast and a DIY guy. When I started out with home automation, I was using the open source OpenHAB for my hub. This was nice for having everything localized, but too get anything to work was a chore and I spent most of my time messing with the system rather than enjoying it. I was looking for a mature system that would give me a lot of the benefits that OpenHAB gave me without all of the time spent on configuring it. I was also looking for a decent home security system to incorporate into the home automation system. That's when I found this product, ADT is the name I trust when it comes to home security and the SmartThings Hub was always ranked #1 in all of the reviews I read.
Thanks to our state-or-the-art home security systems, we are able to calibrate our equipment to better fit your needs. Specifically, our motion detectors can be adjusted to ignore weights up to 40 pounds. Therefore, pets and babies won’t trip the sensor causing a false alarms. PIR sensors avoid false alarms by being able to detect heat, temperature and waves, not just movement. During installation, our professional technicians will provide information about our home security systems to ensure you get the best equipment for your home.
I have had ADT security for almost 2 years now. I bought the system to help protect my family after a home invasion. After 1 year of service, we moved and chose to transfer service to our new house. We had a technician come out and perform the installation and once that was complete we started using the system. A year after transferring service to my new home, I had an issue with the keypad. I called my local ADT office to have them come out and repair it, only to be informed that they never actually transferred the service to my new address!
On-the-Go Access: Thanks to advancements in technology, monitoring your home while you’re away for extended periods has never been easier. Logging into your account online or through an app on your smartphone, you’re able to keep tabs on the comings and goings at your property even if you’re thousands of miles away. This is a huge plus for business owners too as they can monitor employees, day-to-day operations, out-of-hours deliveries, and so on while they’re on the move.
I have been a loyal ADT customer for over 20 years. On December 13, 2016, my alarm went off early in the morning. It freaked me out BIG time. Never happened over the 20 years til now, the intruder most likely left before fully coming into my house. I have this alarm system to thank for keeping us safe. I didn't get evidence of the intruder so didn't have anything to pursue with. Glad I kept it over all the dull years to protect me during the one time it was needed.
Very happy with ADT. I bought an investment property and decided to get an alarm system installed during the five months the property was being renovated. After talking to an ADT representative, I decided to go with them. Things were a little different getting it setup since it wasn't my primary residence but they were able to secure it. It was nice not having to worry about someone breaking in and stealing tools or doing damage to it while it was being renovated.
To protect your privacy, Zmodo apps and Indoor/Outdoor Wireless Kit devices connect to the Zmodo servers using bank-level AES 256-bit encryption and Transport Layer Security (TLS). All video and pictures are secured with AES 256-bit symmetric-key encryption. Only the customer can decrypt and view the video through approved clients (our mobile and web apps) with their account credentials. The Zmodo Indoor/Outdoor Wireless Kit also has perfect forward secrecy, using AES 256-bit private keys for key exchange with the Zmodo servers. We also employ other security measures to protect private data, such as secure HTTP access (HTTPS) using TLS/SSL, and more.
I was satisfied with ADT and as a single woman, my security system gave me the peace of mind I needed to relax in my home with out fearing for my safety. I also enjoyed knowing that when I went on vacation, my house was secure. Many advances in home security systems have been developed since I had my system though and I would love to see what is available now with closed circuit cameras etc.
We purchased our ADT Security System 12 years ago, and we have been very pleased with the professionalism and quick response in the few times we have had to use it. Their was a break-in in 2009 while we were out of town on vacation. They called us immediately and the people were caught running down our street thanks to the quick response from ADT and the Sheriff’s Department. Of course, our teenagers have set the alarm off a few times while we were at work, but ADT handled it for us and were completely understanding and professional! We are so Happy and feel so Secure whether we are at work or on vacation!
Average contracts: Customers sometimes complain that the 36-month contracts for ADT monitoring are too long. We should point out that a 36-month contract is fairly standard in the home security industry. However, customers who care about shorter contracts with more flexibility could look into other companies. For example, Vivint customers who pay for all their security equipment up front don’t need monthly contracts, and Link Interactive offers shorter contract options (starting at 12 months).
“They are always there when you need them which is what I like the most. Highly recommend ADT to all my family and friends. Even when you call with stupid questions they are there for you. The system is that sensitive that it realized something was wrong regarding the heating and a/c and sensed the burnt out panel long before we would have. Thanks.” – David, October 6, 2017, Consumer Affairs
I use ADT in all of my tenants homes and they like it. I have a influx of new tenants constantly so each time that happens I change the alarm code and make them a new user login on the ADT pulse app. I realize most people won't need to do all of this extra work when it is just them using it. If it can hold up in rentals it is definitely a worth-while security system!
Frontpoint requires a big commitment after its 30-day trial: a 36-month contract. If within three years, your housing situation or security priorities change, it could cost 80% of your remaining contract to cancel. However, Frontpoint also makes a big commitment to you. Its equipment comes with a matching three-year warranty, while the rest of the DIY industry caps at one year.
